She cried because she felt like it; she cried because she had to trick Nat. Janine didn’t put it into words for herself, exactly adn’t been before. She couldn’t wait for her Uncle Ross. She couldn’t wait for her mother. Maybe they wanted to, but they hadn’t come for her. So it came down to the same thing. Janine wished she were strong enough to beat Nat up. She thought about Joey Todd at school, the biggest kid she knew. He was her age, but fatter

It is left to Ross Stearns, Janine’s uncle and guardian, to rescue Janine and end the nightmare of senseless violence. The Guardian is an experience of shocking power that takes off like a rocket from the very first chapter.

In The Guardian, Bill Eidson has crafted a thriller that shows the chilling consequences of random violence hitting home in a quiet suburb. Set in the Boston area. But I had to keep reading; Eidson kept the prose moving and the surprises coming, and because certain events warned me that this was not some stock happily-ever-after Crime Light, I was driven to see how it turned out. This book is intelligently written, hard to second-guess. The violence, both psychological and physical, is scarily realistic, and the characters are well drawn.

Bill Eidson’s critically acclaimed thrillers are never too far from the sea, influenced by his growing up and living in New England. Set in the Boston area, this book takes off like a rocket in the first chapter. Moments later a masked gunman walks in, robs the store, shoots the clerk, and, seeing her father's BMW, kidnaps Janine. Eidson deserves a nice, plump best-seller to help raise this one back from the out-of-print graveyard.

This is the first book I have read by Bill Eidson and I enjoyed it immensely. Once started, it was difficult to put down. The action is fast and the characters are interesting and believable. I look forward to reading Bill's other novels.
