In 1461, the mysterious enigmatic Nicholas is in Florence. Backed by none other than Cosimo de' Medici, he will sail the Black Sea to Trebizond, last outpost of Byzantium, and the last jewel missing from the crown of the Ottoman Empire. But trouble lies ahead. Nicholas's step-daughter - at the tender age of thirteen - has eloped with his rival in trade: a Machiavellian Genoese who races ahead of Nicholas, sowing disaster at every port. And time is of the essence: Trebizond may fall tot he Turks at any moment. Crackling with wit, breathtakingly paced, THE SPRING OF THE RAM is a pyro technic blend of scholarship and narrative shimmering with the scents, sounds, colors and combustible emotions of the 15th century.

The House of Niccolò, in all its volumes, deals with the forerunner without whom Lymond would not have existed: the unknown who fought his way to the high ground that Francis Crawford would occupy, and held it for him. It is fiction, but the setting at least is very real. The man I have called Nicholas de Fleury lived in the mid-fifteenth century, three generations before Francis Crawford, and was reared as an artisan, his gifts and his burdens concealed beneath an artless manner and a joyous, sensuous personality.

The second of Dorothy Dunnett's House of Niccolo books takes her hero (now definitely Nicholas, rather than Claes, and leader rather than apprentice) on a trading mission to Trebizond in 1461. Having looked up Trebizond when I read The Towers of Trebizond, I knew from the start that this wasn't likely to be an entirely uneventful trip, as indeed it wasn't, featuring Dunnett's trademark twisting plots; sequences that had me turning the pages, unable to put the book down until I found out how Nicholas and h The second of Dorothy.

My experience with this novel was like basically every other Dunnett novel I have read.

Judith Wilt, in her introduction recaps the first book, Niccolo Rising to orient those who have missed out. When we rejoin Nicholas de Fleury he is now nineteen years old and married to the owner of the dye shop for which he had apprenticed. As a budding entrepreneur this is a well played move. My experience with this novel was like basically every other Dunnett novel I have read. That is I start to read it and get hopelessly bogged down in the details and all of the other setup work that she does.

The second in the Niccolo series and just as compelling as the Lymond series in it's own right. I love the way the author allows the reader to become so invested in the characters. All of the characters from the central ones right down to the peripheral characters, all make their presence felt.
There is far more to the young Claes, dye apprentice turned world worldy adventurer then was first apparent and I'm enjoying seeing more and more of the machinations of Claes being revealed.
A word of warning though, whilst the series appears to be a rollicking good yarn there are some very dark and uncomfortable undertones present in this series. The stories themselves are quite addictive reading.
I'm giving this 5 stars as well, I'm enjoying this as much as the Lymond series and I can tell you that Ihad my doubts about that.

The author intertwines her intriguing characters with actual history making the Niccolo series very authentic. I read the first book of this series and was halfway through the second book when I had to return it to the local library. These books are so good that I bought the series so I wouldn't have to stop reading again until I wanted to eg: finish the series!

I have read this series before, admittedly, many years ago. I totally enjoyed it last time, and I am thoroughly enjoying it again. This is the perfect type of book for me; it's historical, it stays true to the language and styles of the period, great characters and it will keep you intrigued to the end.
