Mary Swander (born November 5, 1950) is an American poet and memoirist. A graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa, Swander is a distinguished professor of English at Iowa State University. She is the author of 2 memoirs, The Desert Pilgrim and Out of this World, as well as 3 books of poetry, Heaven-and-Earth House, Driving the Body Back, and Succession. Swander has also co-authored a musical, Dear Iowa, with composer Christopher Frank, which has been produced across the Midwest and on Iowa Public Television.

Mary Swander's autobiographical poetry is rooted in religious faith and rural life. Her verses speak of natural wonders, of learning from the land, and of the people who live and work on the land. Her work has been greatly influenced by a serious medical condition, one that led her to take up a simple life among the Amish.
