Cameron's intelligence is alert but not deep, with the result that pieces like ""Hell on Wheels"" (straight and gay sexual politics among office workers) and ""The False Princess"" (a droll retelling of the princess and the pea) can captivate with their tony smartness but then degenerate into the truncations and easy reversals of the sit-com, or into the throwaway one-liners of the stand-up comic (". .when all along I was a latent asexual"").

Settings range from Japanese villages barely touched by the twentieth century to SoHo's latest temple of trendiness. These fifteen stylish stories, gleefully examine the predicaments of characters who see themselves as reasonable beings marooned in an unreasonable world. Of note is the wide range of personalities and lifestyles herein depicted; the protaganists speak well in many voices.

Lindsley Cameron came to work at The New Yorker in August of 1985. She had left a job at a marketing agency and taken a cut in pay to work in the typing pool. She was there for only a day or two before moving to foundry proofreading, the last step before a piece goes to press. When her adoptive mother died, in 1996, and Lindsley came into her inheritance, she was out of here like a shot. Lindsley was obsessed with finding her biological parents.
