At thirteen, William Sheppard was sent to the Swope Ranch Boys’ Reformatory for stabbing his abusive father in the chest with a pocketknife. Buried deep in the Colorado Mountains, Swope is shrouded in legend and defined by one prevailing rumor: the boys who go in never come out the same. Days from civilization with only one accessible road ― any prisoner who attempts to escape will be shot down without hesitation. There is no forgiveness from the mountains or the guards. At Swope, mustangs are trucked in to be broken by a select group of inmates. Once the horses are gentled, they are sold across the Southwest. Horses come and go, delinquent boys come and go. The boys break the horses, Swope breaks the boys. If the boys are to withstand the ranch, they must first overcome violence and tragedy ― only to be haunted forever. I read "Kings of Colorado" shortly after it was released. I have posted in numerous forums that it is the best book I've ever read. This morning I read the first chapter of your new book. I would not have believed any video could be worthy of that book, but this one is. It is hauntingly beautiful, as is the book.

The "I" of David E. Hilton's first novel Kings of Colorado (Simon & Schuster) is Will Sheppard, a battered 13 year old who's forced to leave Chicago for a brutal Colorado reformatory school after the aforementioned stabbing incident. Publishers Weekly calls it "a stark novel of violence and fierce friendship" and Kirkus chimes in with a heartfelt portrait of young men in a bygone ag. But don't take their word for it – you can hear Hilton, a Round Rock resident, read from the novel at his launch party tomorrow (Jan. 13), 7pm at BookPeople.

David E. Hilton’s Kings of Colorado, a book that equal parts Annie . Hilton’s Kings of Colorado, a book that equal parts Annie Proulx and Larry McMurtry set in Colorado in the 1960s. But in Kings of Colorado, Hilton allows you to look into these characters and see that redemption is possible. The story of all things wild-wild horses, wild boys, and the wild landscape that looms above it all-this book is as heartbreaking and as hopeful as anything you will read this year. Hilton's portrayal of adolescent friendship is authentic and touching, and the story moves at a speedy pace as the boys' innocence is shattered in ever deeper and more profound ways. A sort of Stand by Me behind bars.

This is, in brief, one of the finest books I've ever read. It belongs on the shelf with Lord of the Flies, Where the Red Fern Grows, Tom Sawyer and other classics. This book should be required reading, not only for it's content, the wonderful, strange and terrifying story, but for how it is put together. There's not a single wrong note, not a wasted word, nothing that doesn't pull you forward to the last page.

Very intense, and sad, but with a great ending that turns into some peace for the main character. I can't say enough, this is just a great book. If you're a major reader, as I am, this is one of the books you're always looking for. One that will take over your days, and haunt you when you're done.

Excellent, excellent book. Yes, there is no question that it is a difficult book to read - definitely not a feel-good story. The characters - and Reaper - are so clearly defined that they seem to become a part of you the entire time you are reading it. You are right there with them with every experience, the ones that make you laugh, the ones that make you cry, and the ones that make you angry. These are characters, a horse, and a story that weave their way into you and I know will stay with me for a very long time. I am really glad that I didn't miss this one.

Finally, a literary novel with a compelling plot. Hilton provides an inside view of corruption and tyranny in a boys' reformatory isolated deep in the Colorado Rockies. Some literary critics have compared Kings of Colorado to Lord of the Flies. I have read both novels in the last three months and found Kings of Colorado far superior. Hilton forces the reader to endure the physical and emotional stress of his characters and demonstrates post-traumatic stress syndrome in the making. I have read Pulitzer winning novels that had far less to offer than Kings of Colorado.

It's been a long time since I've read a book this well written. Characters, plot, imagery - - all were perfectly crafted. The subject is intense and not at all what I normally read but the book came highly recommended by a friend. Now, I am the one recommending it to everyone I know.

I don't think I'm a very good book reviewer, but I do know what I like. This book was hard to put down. It went from one shocking, raw event to another, and I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning reading the denouement.

Fantastic storytelling and gut-wrenching emotion. A beautiful story of human failures and frailty, redemption and forgiveness

The Kings of Colorado is a story about a middle aged man's look back at his youth when they sent him to a boy's ranch in Colorado for stabbing his abusive father. This coming of age tale kept me turning the page. It was an excellent read.
It was very interesting and kind of sad. I liked it.
