I grew up reading Plaid Bear and the Rude Rabbit gang, and have to say that it is one of the best books that I have ever read in my life. This book teaches kids how to deal with rude/'bad' people, and why you shouldn't be rude to other people. The thing about this book, however, is that it's not a preachy kindergarten-ish book, it's an interesting story, illustrated with wonderful, humerous pictures.

Anyway, the rabbits bump the vacationers off the road, spill Plaid Bear's lemonade at a sidewalk cafe, toss stolen jelly beans and Plaid Bear himself in the air at an amusement park, and eat up the friends' picnic at the beach. Finally, the four stuffed friends dress up as one big sea monster to scare the camping rabbits. But just as readers might, one of the frightened rabbits spies a pair of chicken feet back toward the ""monster's"" tail. The appeal is of the quaint and tidy sort, and the same audience will be captivated by Roche's Easter-egg palette, the rabbits' expressions and antics, and such touches as the monster's tiny chicken feet.

I was pretty sure this first Rabbit & Bear book, Rabbit's Bad Habits, would be new to them, and I'm happy to report . I was not disappointed. Some sections are laugh out loud funny, and the story itself has a very positive message.

I was pretty sure this first Rabbit & Bear book, Rabbit's Bad Habits, would be new to them, and I'm happy to report that it was a huge hit with both my grandson and granddaughter, evoking rapt attention and howls of laughter even after many readings.

& because Ray is one of my favourite authors, I thought I would love this book. It had elements which were referred to (again by Raymond Carver)that were right up my alley ...horses, Mongolian tribes, love, sex...the whole shabang. I found it surprisingly vapid, shallow & undeveloped. Now, I don't proclaim myself an author...but, I am a helluva reader...and this novel falls short. Its that simple....if you are looking for an intelligent read with no disappointments & horsey, ranchey, sexy references borne from experience, if you want moments of pure poetry & hard beauty, buy William Kittredge.
