Houston was born in San Francisco, where his parents had migrated from Quanah, Texas, a small town named for the noted last Comanche war chief, Quanah Parker. The story behind the town's name kindled Houston's interest in treks and history. He graduated from Lowell High School.

James Houston biography: James D. Houston is the author of eight novels, including Bird of Another Heaven and Snow Mountain Passage. While there he sold his first novel and completed his second, Gig, which won the Joseph Henry Jackson Award for Fiction. Since 1962 he and Jeanne have lived in Santa Cruz, within view of Monterey Bay, where they raised their three children, Corinne, Joshua and Gabrielle. For several years he made his living as a musician, teaching classical and folk guitar, and playing acoustic bass in a piano bar and in a bluegrass band.

James D. Houston in this book has converged the talents of a library pack rat with the stylistic and visionary grasp equal to any of America's contemporary novelists. This is the kind of book that should be assigned in history classes, just to turn people on to history and great writing
