The book was originally published by M. A. Donohue in Chicago in 1904, and then in 1905 with additional poems. The book has the 1905 Introduction by Charles Walter Brown (1866 - 1934), an author who specialized in history and biography. Many of the poems in the book are humorous, but included are a number of Field's famous lullabies, including"Orkney Lullaby", "Japanese Lullaby", "Armenian Lullaby", and "Cornish Lullaby".
