The only thing better than reading Hegley's poems is hearing Hegley read them. He has a wonderful delivery that breathes so much extra wit and feeling into the words. These are poems that are made to be read aloud, but practice first if you are going to try and impress someone. Timing and emphasis are everything.

John Hegley touches on many of his favourite subjects in this 127 page volume - dogs, glasses, tea and the Romans.
His first thespian experience detailed in 'On the boards in the glasses' is typical of his short poems - with a few words he sets the scene and then delivers the comic twist, often in a slightly self-disparaging kind of way. Also typical is his evident joy with the sound of spoken English and the way words of different meanings and context can so easily be mistaken. Add to this several wry observations ranging from school, through a campsite to Radio Three and this volume will act as a good introduction to the work of John Hegley - poet, singer, musician, comedian, writer and proud glasses-wearer.
Of his other collections of poetry, my favourites are Glad to Wear Glasses and Can I Come Down Now Dad - check them out, I'd give them 5 stars.

Hegley's use of wit and imagination combine to make poetry that will leave you aching with laughter...He truly is a comic genius who is able to bring pazazz into the world of poetry.
