This Was the. Old Chief’s Country. Collected African Stories

This Was the. Collected African Stories. My favourites in This Was the Old Chief’s Country are not necessarily those that have been most translated, which are Little Tembi, The Old Chief Mshlanga, and No Witchcraft for Sale. A Sunrise on the Veld, for instance, and Winter in July are both larger stories than the directly social ones. These stories have in common that they are set in Africa, but that is all they have in common. For one thing, while the Old Chief was a collection of real short stories, Five is five long stories, almost short novels.

This Was the Old’s Chief’s Country is a collection of astonishing short stories. All the stories happened in Africa, a beautiful and marvelous continent, with a tragic history. It is a book of ordinary people, black or white, but the color of the book is neither black nor white it has every different color you can imagine. Characters are colorful as well, and it goes deep in to African society and shows how people suffer and cope with discrepancies and prejudices in a similar way although they are different in many aspects.

Doris May Lessing CH OMG (née Tayler; 22 October 1919 – 17 November 2013) was a British-Zimbabwean (Rhodesian) novelist. She was born to British parents in Iran, where she lived until 1925. After the divorce, Doris' interest was drawn to the community around the Left Book Club, an organisation she had joined the year before. Thirty years ago I read Lessing's The Good Terrorist and I still remember how the novel opened a whole new view of terrorism. This year I decided to read This Was the Old Chief's Country and I understand more clearly the struggles in post colonial southern Africa. It put a different focus on my recent visit to southern Africa, which I am sharing with a new generation of college students. It is a wonderful book!
