This collection offers twenty-one stories from America, a nation which has always been particularly at home with this form, and which has produced many of its masters. Some of the stories included - those by Poe, James and Hemingway for example - are already widely known. Some will be less familiar to the English reader. Ranging from Washington Irving to John Updike, via Ambrose Bierce, Willa Cather and Bernard Malamud, this is an excellent and entertaining introduction to the rich diversity of pleasures that the best American short stories can offer.

At every request that he behave as the other employees and do some work, he is met with the words, I would prefer not to.

The Penguin Book of English Short Stories. The stories range from works written in 1783 to the Updike, written in 1932. The Penguin Book of American Verse. The Penguin Book of Modern British Short Stories. As a selection I would have liked more written by women, but to compensate, there are stories here from Katherine Anne Porter, F Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Truman Capote, Henry James, and Stephen Crane. A marvellous collection.
