A stranger who feels mistreated by a supposedly incorruptible town concocts a vengeful scheme to test the honesty of its leading citizens.

I was the only man in the worldwho could furnish here any detail of the test-mark-by HONOURABLE means.

I was the only man in the worldwho could furnish here any detail of the test-mark-by HONOURABLE means. There is nothing in the world like a persuasive speech to fuddle themental apparatus and upset the convictions and debauch the emotions ofan audience not practised in the tricks and delusions of oratory. That was sung, with booming enthusiasm. Then the happy house startedin at the beginning and sang the four lines through twice, with immenseswing and dash, and finished up with a crashing three-times-three and atiger for "Hadleyburg the Incorruptible and all Symbols of it which weshall find worthy to receive the hall-mark to-night.

It was many years ago. It had kept that reputation unsmirched during three generations, and was prouder of it than of any other of its possessions. It was so proud of it, and so anxious to insure its perpetuation, that it began to teach the principles of honest dealing to its babies in the cradle, and made the like teachings the staple of their culture thenceforward through all the years devoted to their education.

A short, intriguing tale about the hypocrites among us. The premise was interesting, but the execution . I consider a story good when I have a strong physical reaction to it, and The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg tied my stomach up in knots. Mark Twain nailed human greed. The premise was interesting, but the execution seemed a bit artificial. He nailed it, and he hit upon some sort of larger unconscious truth that I can reach at but cannot grasp.

The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg, a Mark Twain classic, is a darkly humorous story about greed and hypocrisy. It is a morality tale about an upright village whose virtue has never been tested; the town is suddenly challenged by a devilish, vengeful stranger intent on exposing the townspeople’s greedy, dishonest nature. The adaptation distills the town to four representative couples who are tempted by the promise of wealth. The play is faithful to the story with some omission of heavily narrative material of a not particularly dramatic nature toward the end of the original story.

In short, no Jew was doing any mischief toward anybody whatsoever. In fact, the Jews were the only ones of the nineteen different races in Austria which did not have a party-they are absolute non-participants. Yet in your article you say that in the rioting which followed, all classes of people were unanimous only on one thing, vi. in being against the Jews. Now, will you kindly tell me why, in your judgment, the Jews have thus ever been, and are even now, in these days of supposed intelligence, the butt of baseless, vicious animosities?
