Strange things are happening near Granite Creek, Colorado, all in the space of less than twenty-four hours. A Ute shaman dreams of being buried alive and hears the hooting of an owl, signaling impending death. A man walks into Spirit Canyon and disappears, leaving his battered wife both relieved and devastated. A private museum is burgled. An Apache is arrested for assaulting a police officer. And a sniper takes a shot through an antique store window, wounding the proprietor.

Part-time Ute tribal investigator Charlie Moon would rather be tending to his duties on the Columbine Ranch than playing detective with this puzzling collection of seemingly unrelated events. But when the local police and the FBI-including the beguiling Special Agent Lila McTeague-can't seem to put it all together, Charlie must connect the dots before anyone else dies.

In The Witch's Tongue, James D. Doss's complex and absorbing crime novel set on the Ute reservation in Southern Colorado, Charlie Moon's cleverness and his aunt Daisy Perika's intuition-not to mention the spellbinding story behind this hell of a day-share the limelight with the vibrant details of Native life and custom.

Another wonderful tale filled with intrigue and punctuated with unexpected humor. Doss twists and turns his story through unexpected tangents and when you think his Charley Moon has solved his mystery off he goes in another direction and the story continues. Doss humor is sprinkled throughout in such delightful ways that it always has me laughing to tears. You find you want the story to never end as the characters of Charlie and his aunt Daisy interact. Now on my second read and still laughing all
the way despite the murders and crime. Keep it up James Doss!

I thoroughly enjoy Doss's Charlie Moon mysteries and am working my way through the series. I rarely figure out who did what to whom before Charlie explains everything, though I truly enjoy making the attempt. The humor displayed throughout the story is a good balance for the grislier aspects of death(s) by murder and I enjoy Doss's descriptions of the landscapes in which his characters move. I find these books difficult to put down. More fun than Tony Hillerman!

James Doss' Charlie Moon is one of the best characters that I have come across in a long time. The writing is informative, entertaining, and cleaver. I laugh out loud sometimes with the way things are put. Wish I had more of Charlie Moon's character! Sadly, James Doss has passed away, but I will reread each of his books again; that's how good they are.
