Delgado couldn’t understand how that happened, though she recognizes that it happens in real life. In figuring out how to answer that why that happened, she realized that it has to do with the willingness or unwillingness to see reality. The rest of the witty and engaging novel stemmed from that. And, Isabel Allende’s Ripper is not Latino Literature, according to Delgado. The author has an upcoming appearance at the Miami Book Fair, and she will be faculty at the upcoming San Miguel de Allende Writer’s Workshop alongside the brilliant Gloria Steinem and many others.

I have read all Anjanette Delgado books. Her characters are interesting people that have insights into things that make me see the world in a different light. She allows the reader inside the head AND heart of her characters and nothing is superficial. THE CLAIRVOYANT OF CALLE OCHO is my favorite book by her, but this was really good also.

Review: THE HEARTBREAK PILL is a romantic comedy that won First Place in the Latino Books into Movies Awards contest; my novel, OPERATION FAMILIA, won Second Place in the same category, so I was curious to read the novel that won over mine. I wasn't disappointed! From page one, my attention was riveted to Erika Luna's story and I read the book in two days.

Erika Luna, a research chemist for Nuevo Med, is a Cuban-American wife who's dumped callously by her handsome husband of seven years. In her distinctive voice, she tells of her slow, painful journey from the fog of denial into the light of forgiveness and indifference--in Erika's words, from "please come back" to "to hell with him", and finally to "I could care less"--and a kind of peace within herself. Along the way to self-knowledge and acceptance, she researches the part of the brain that controls a human's emotions and discovers that the chemical reactions in the caudate nucleus center of the brain cause the euphoria of love, its addictive qualities, and the mental and physical pain of love's loss. With her quick scientific mind, Erika experiments with a drug that can reduce her own pain and fill the "big black hole" in her heart/brain. Only then, she decides, can she truly heal and be happy again. Of course, she's thinking like a scientist. What she soon learns is that other factors come into play when trying to close the wound of heartbreak.

Along the way, she meets two men who show her different aspects of her self; one is a painter who happens to speak my favorite line of dialogue in the book: "What is art, poetry and music but the transformation of an artist's pain into a present for humanity?"

In this delightful, humorous but poignant story, Anjanette Delgado shows us the journey everyone must take to recover from love's loss. And I couldn't help but think of my second novel, HASTA LA VISTA, BABY, another story of heartbreak and healing. The same catalyst but two totally different stories. Heartbreak is an all too familiar story but with a zillion different journeys.

Now it's up to Erika -- along with her father, his partner, and a few friends -- to get her life back on track.

Along this road of self-discovery, Erika stumbles upon a brilliant idea: why not find a pill that one can take to cure heartbreak? Being the brilliant chemist that she is, Erika starts on a journey to end worldwide heartbreak in the form of a pharmaceutical pill.

Ms. Delgado writes a witty story about a woman on a path of self-discovery. Erika's story and realizations are inspiring to any reader. After finishing the book, the reader will feel satisfied and refreshed -- ready to go out on his or her own journey to figure out who they really are.

This funny and entertaining story will please all who read it.

Discúlpenme por escribir en español pero me es mucho más fácil, y como muchos de los lectores en este país somos bilingües me encanta expresarme en mi lengua natal, me fascinó el libro, te atrapa en una lectura constante que en dos o tres sentadas lo terminas y después hubieses querido que fuera mas largo.
Es una historia actual de amor y desamor pero muy bien estructurada con personajes fascinantes como LOLA, BENJI, PEDRO JUAN (estos son los buenos) y hasta los malos tienen una personalidad propia que aunque los odies te resultan interesantes, es el caso de MARTIN.
Pienso que la píldora fue la excusa perfecta de esta escritora Portorriqueña para conducir esta novela, sin restarle meritos a lo científico pienso que es fascinante la otra visión de Miami que no esta al alcance de los ojos de los que vivimos en esta ciudad que hay que buscarla dentro de esta mezcla multicultural que vive en cada rincón de este paraíso tropical, otra cosa muy interesante es la voz propia de cada personaje es increíble como los vas identificando sin siquiera nombrarlo. Me gusto mucho como se manejan temas tan sensibles y cotidianos como la violencia domestica y la homosexualidad, bueno...les recomiendo a todos que la lean es de esas pocas cosas que van quedando que no te arrepientes de haber gastado el dinero....

Para la autora: Para que exista el mundo tiene que haber de todo, hasta personas tan falta de sensibilidad como la que se nombra booklover122 gracias a ese review compre tu libro porque me resistía a pensar que pudiese ser tan malo y gracias a dios estaba en lo cierto...felicidades y esperamos tu próxima novela.

I could not put this book down! I laughed, I cried and I found pieces of me and my life in it. The brainy professional temporarily derailed by a love mess is an all too true tale and Ms. Delgado tells it in a delightful and compelling way. The characters have depth, are hilarious and remind me of the zany characters in many of our lives. I would love to see this made as a movie and look forward to Ms. Delgado's next book. If you haven't read it yet, put it on your summer or travel reading list. This book is quite simply great fun!
