Martine’s Handbook of Etiquette is a window to a time when relationships between the sexes was quite different. Put a book in front of me and the words start flowing. But the other part, the part that wants to understand human interaction was intrigued. Sometimes it helps to have perspective from somewhere different so that we can understand the present. This book is just that. Somewhere else and sometime different. But so much of it is sexist and prejudiced. Still, I have no regrets.

Why can't more of my friends read this? They say art is the main indication of the values of a culture, but I think the real indication would be our idea of etiquette. That might be an exaggeration, but the rules here, though dated, are still products of sharp insight and humor and plenty can still be used for today's time to help you be a nicer person. True, lots of it is blatantly sexist but most of it sets itself apart from actual snobbery by emphasizing kindness over superficial "well-breeding." The prose is direct and to the point, so it's very easy to flip open to any page and skim that, then move on with your day.

This book was helpful for the research paper I had but it was rather a hard read since it was so boring. I did use it for my paper but overall I could have gone and used another book more so that I found much more informative. But, since I had to have a few books this one provided the extra book I needed to have.
