James B. Lamb was one of those men, and he has written a superb story about & Corvette Navy' of Canada which helped fight the U-boats to a stand-still in World War II. Corvettes were rugged little ships, about 200 feet in length and only 1,200 tons, based on the design of Antarctic whaling ships. Almost 300 were built, the largest number of any one class of warships ever built. One of the best books I have read in a long time.

The Corvette Navy book. Escorting ships to war was a crucial part of Canada's involvement. This small book had me admiring the determination, fortitude and courage of the men of the RCN during challenging seas and missions and then laughing out loud during the parts which revealed the antics and You don't have to be a member of the Navy to enjoy reading this book and I recommend you reserve it from your library.

I ordered the paperback edition of "The Corvette Navy" by James B. Lamb rated in good condition with the expectation that it would have a text font size that would enable me to read the book without straining my eyes since I am 77 years old. What I received was a mass-market paperback edition in small type. The front cover picture of a Corvette ship did not match the advertised front cover picture on Amazon which indicates to me that the seller, New Chapter Recycling, substituted a mass-market book for the paperback edition that I ordered. The condition of the book I received did match the advertised condition of "good" however. I did not try to return the book since it had less than 200 pages of text which would allow me to enjoy reading the book slowly and still not take up too much time. I might add that the book is excellent reading about the history of Canadian Corvettes and would equal "The Cruel Sea", a story about the British Corvettes, if it had a more comprehensive history of the Canadian Corvettes. In any case, I enjoyed the book very much and wish I could have received the paperback edition since I know that I will reread the book. I'll just have to read slow again.

Fast gripping read. Who knew the conditions of service were what they were? Who knew what it was to sweep the D-Day beeches and watch the others go in? Who knew the travail of finding the dead at sea more often than a survivor? Who knew the last survivor's tale? Remember the debt owed to a mostly bygone crew of heroes and their children. Thanks, Harry!

One of the best accounts of the trials and troubles of any fighting campaign I've ever read.

I picked it up in a used book store for $2 and it may be one of the best books on my shelf.

I was surprised and delighted as I was drawn into the captivating story told in "The Corvette Navy."

Lamb truly tells a fascinating tale while maintaining a respectful and honest account of the humour, horror and honor of these escorts ships.

Most amazingly, he captures the esprit de corps of the men who served valiantly (although no always voluntarily) as they faced the challenge of their generation.

The Chapter on marine D-Day operations (so often cut short once the infantry hits the beach) was especially good.

A full recommendation to any and all. A GREAT BOOK
