The Denver that resulted was at once opulent and brutal. Dorsett - The Queen City: A History of Denver (The Pruett Series). Panic of 1893, Grover Cleveland, Rocky Mountains. The largest houses rivaled those of New York and Boston, while much of the city operated without a sewer system. Smelters operated in the working class section of town. The smoke and dust permeated the town and obscured the mountains from view on some days, in spite of the fact that some were only twelve or fifteen miles away. Wild dogs roamed the dirt-packed streets, as did gangs of teenage hoodlums.

I read all sorts of history books from Classical history to biographies of historical figures to fairly complicated economic and cultural histories...few are as well done as this relatively straightforward account of the birth and development of Denver over its first century and a half...

The first fifty years of Denver were dusty, chaotic and marginal: the first section of the book drove home the extent to which the successful establishment of a city on the high plains was nearly miraculous. The description of how few key figures: Byers, the Boetchers and Evanses, forged the identity, and eked out a city from the thinnest of premises, establishing a meritocracy surrounded by untrammeled lawlessness, transient population and grinding poverty. The way that the initial dusty, smoky, dirty city was transformed under a series of visionaries: Speer, Stapleton and Newton particularly into what we have now, was extremely convincing in its telling: I am more than ever aware of the power of a visionary leader to transform a populace for the better: the vast green areas of Denver, for example, are entirely due to the personal commitment of four individuals. When they were not in power, much was lost.

Cities have become increasingly complex: but I also believe that much of the gridlock and stupidity in our political processes is due to the lack of this sort of charismatic individual entering the public arena: this book will convince you too on how the character and strength of mayors in particular are crucial for the success of a community.

I loved this book so much I bought an extra copy to share with friends: if you live in Denver, you should read this book. If you don't live here, it should still be useful (and I must say I feel sorry for you!)...
