Repository: Dumbarton Oaks Archives, Washington, . Ernst Kitzinger was a German-born Byzantine and medieval art historian who spent much of his adult life in America and England. Kitzinger was born in Munich, Germany in 1912. He attended the Max-Gymnasium in Munich, where he graduated in 1931, and universities in Munich where he studied art history, archaeology, and philosophy between 1931 and 1934. Kitzinger left Germany in 1935 and went to Rome and then to England, where he accepted a position at the British Museum.
