Arianism is the archetypal Christian heresy. It was not only a watershed historically; its central issue-the question of Christ's full co-equal divinity as Son of God-remains an issue of deep concern to every generation of Christians, including our own. The traditional critique of Arianism is that its errors arise from an over-intellectual approach to Christianity, that it failed because it lacked a gospel of salvation. Questions about that traditional view have been raised here and there in recent years

This book is profoundly useful to the scholar, or even the average reader, seeking to better understand the Arian controversy of the third and fourth centuries. I have long understood this controversy as more of an argument about the ontology of God. The authors of this text don't deny the importance of this question, but they argue that Arius and his followers were more interested in the soteriological debate. In other words, they argued for the Son to be a lesser being than God the Father because of the question of salvation. To save us, the Son had to be like us--in other words, he could not be co-eternal with the Father.

I especially recommend this volume for those who teach early christology. Although it is helpful for the average reader interested in the topic, it will be a bit of a "slow read." But it's not an impossible one.

A marvelous publication--one of a kind! The fariness and love for the topic shows through in the authors investigation. Should be mandatory reading for all theological students.
