Book by Schaff, Philip

One feature of the History of the Christian Church that readers immediately notice is just how beautifully written it is-especially in comparison to other texts of a similar nature. Simply put, Schaff's prose is lively and engaging.

One feature of the History of the Christian Church that readers immediately notice is just how beautifully written it is-especially in comparison to other texts of a similar nature. As one reader puts it, these volumes are "history written with heart and soul. Although at points the scholarship is slightly outdated, overall History of the Christian Church is great for historical referencing. Countless people have found History of the Christian Church useful.

Another great Schaff volume, this one covering the end of the Middle Ages (which Schaff places at the beginning of the Reformation, as opposed to the more popular theories of either 1453 or during the Renaissance)

Overall, this is a great history of the era, maybe not as good as the previous few books, but there's a lot more terrible stuff going on in this time period, so maybe Schaff wasn't on his A-game

Philip Schaff (1819-1893) was a Swiss-born, German-educated Protestant theologian and Church historian, who was a professor at Union Theological Seminary. His 8-volume History is a classic; this sixth volume was actually written by his son David, after the father's death. The next volume in the series is History Of The Christian Church Volume VII: Modern Crhistianity, The German Reformation. Schaff says that in the Papal bull 'Unam Sanctam,' "the arrogance of the papacy finds its most naked and irritating expression.

Philip Schaff's "History of the Christian Church" was a massive undertaking and one that remains a landmark study of church history nearly 150 years after its composition. Volume 6 of this history covers the period from the beginning of the reign of Boniface VIII (1294) until the beginning of the Protestant Reformation as dated by Luther's composition of the 95 Theses. These years leading up to the Reformation were tumultuous ones for the Western church. They included the "Babylonian Captivity" of the Papacy, its Great Schism, the conciliar movement (culminating in the Council of Constance), and the Renaissance Papacy. Schaff covers this period in great detail. But his work is more than a study of the Papacy. He also discusses the German Mystics, Wycliffe, and Huss, as well as popular piety and even the witchcraft prevalent during this era.

Although quite detailed, this work is easy to read. Schaff's style is accessible and engaging. This is a great work for the serious student of the history of Christianity.
