This book was accurate for it's time but studies done in the past 10 years have made this book inaccurate for the domestic canine.

I bought this book because I am a big fan of Turid Rugaas and it is on her recommended reading list. I had purchased and watched a Twazer seminar video with Abrantes, in which he is obviously very knowledgeable but too showman for my taste. This book makes some really important and original points, that I didn't find in other great books on canine evolution(i.e. Coppinger's Dogs) about dominance theories. Abrantes suggests that some dogs are innately more dominant,(just born that way, without being anthromorphic) and others less, while still refuiting the outdated classical dominance theories. Abrantes scientifically explains why this innate difference is useful and necessary in dog/wolf evolution.I have studied this argument alot and a light bulb went off and did some serious reflecting. There are some other pearls. I highly recommend.

As a student of science and someone who does research in the animal behavior field I had to comment. The author makes a pale attempt at writing a book both for a scientific and a layman audience. It was a good effort, but the amount of oversimplifications and just incorrect information makes this book a waste of time. It is rife with spelling mistakes and a lot of the text is fill

I'm just starting to learn about behavior as I train to become a dog trainer. I had the basis but this offered a reason why.

Possibly the best book to start with for a dog owner or dog trainer. If you can see through the eyes of your dog he would fill your soul with so much information. Slave training your dog as a bondsman to perform task is the way most people approach their pets. They say but we use positive reinforcement (barf). This is easy to read and will make sure you don't fall victim to bad dog training. The people who don't get it or understand it, are misleading. It is a pleasure to read and is timeless. I don't know the Author, and have no reason to promote this book other than I loved reading it. I have 35 years training dogs. Roger Abrantes, is the Ray Hunt of dog training.

I found this to be dry and lacking. I thought it was more on social animal behavior rather than being specifically on wolves, dogs, etc. interesting read that you can skim through relatively quickly.

training your dog makes him/her a special friend, not a problem. This book teaches you about your friends.
It answered all the questions I had about animal behavior. Will recommend to my friends a must read for all dog lovers
