Phil Austin is one of the four members of the Firesign Theatre. He is best known for this "audio novel" Roller Maidens from Outer Space as well as his long-time portrayal of "Nick Danger - Third Eye" on the syndicated radio show The Daily Feed, and most recently in Down Under Danger on Public Radio's "Pulp Radio" series. His next publication will be a novel, Beaver Teeth. All are free-associative conversations between Austin and others-mostly the rambling, besotted shamus of the title. Even more droll and surreal than in his youth, Austin has audibly mellowed, his energy measured and his voice mature.

Starting as live radio actors, the group would go on to record a series of surrealistic comedy albums that were a hit amongst an underground audience. Austin played the group's best-known creation, private investigator Nick Danger. Two of his stories appear in the third volume of Mirth of a Nation.

Phil Austin, a founding member of the Firesign Theatre, a satirical comedy group whose albums became a touchstone of the countercultural era, and who created the character Nick Danger, a wacky detective with a mystical third eye power, died June 18 at his home on Fox Island, Wash. He was 74. Firesign co-founder David Ossman said Mr. Austin had cancer. It was through albums - Firesign recorded more than a dozen - that the group primarily earned its popularity.

He was born in Denver, Colorado and later grew up in Fresno, California, attending Fresno High School. Austin is best known for his work as part of The Firesign Theatre (of which he is the only constant member), where he plays the group's best-known creation, Nick Danger. Other prominent roles are as Harry (Happy) Cox, the narrator of Everything You Know Is Wrong and Bebop Loco/Lobo on Give Me Immortality or Give Me Death.
