I bought this book through mail order. If I had browsed through it in a bookstore, I never would have bought it. I bought it because of it's good looking cover which is the best thing about this book. NEVER judge a book by it's cover!

The problems with this book are that:

1) It's politicized. I like my movie books to be without politics otherwise I cannot enjoy them. If I want politics, I'll watch C-Span. The author pretty much sees political messages (from a left wing point of view) in each and every film he writes about in this book. He finds political messages in movies where no politics exist and even in the movies where they do exist, he gives the wrong interpretation. For example, he claims the film "It Conquered The World" has a disturbingly pro-McCarthyist message when in fact it is anti-McCarthyist. Famed B-movie Producer/Director Roger Corman, who directed that film, and is a known left winger, has said so in his own auto-biography. And as for the classic film "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", the author gives us the tired myth, which has unfortunately and wrongfully become accepted into the conventional wisdom, that Body Snatchers is an allegory of the then Red Scare. In fact, those who have worked behind the scenes of this film have said that there was a Sci-Fi craze going on in this country at the time and they were simply trying to cash in on it with Body Snatchers.

2) This book is pretty much barren of info. I like my film books to give me PLENTY of info. Books with interviews or antecdotes from those who were involved with the making of their films, rare still pictures taken on the set or publicity photos, personal and biographical info on the actors, directors and others of these films, an extensive list of credits and so on. The author of this book gives us NONE of that. Instead, he gives us ONLY the plot of the film, only one or two picture stills from the movie itself (none of which are rare photos. They're all pics Ive seen before), a plot description and the authors boring politicized evaluation of each film. Not even a review of the films to tell us whether or not if he recommends them. Quite a bore.

I'm a big horror fan, have literally watched 70% of all horror films ever made, write for horror and B-movie websites, and constantly read books about horror films. This one suggested a few films that I had never heard about and am quite interested in watching, along with the typical comments on some movies that are the standard fare of any book about B-movies (e.g. "Blood Orgy of the She Devils", or the movie that is the first half of the subtitle of this book). It has enough info on some films, while on others you wish the author would write more about their bizarre history.
The problem with the book, unfortunately, are the interpretations that the author writes at the end of over half of his reviews. For example, he points out obvious environmentalist messages behind any giant-monster-caused-by-radioactivity movie, or reminds us that the sinners die in any slasher. But he really makes a mess when at the end of ANY movie where the villain is a woman, he interprets the film as being misogynist and against women's rights. I mean, really, this guy suggests that the people behind "The Corpse Grinders" were actually thinking when they wrote the screenplay and shot the film.
Still, for the most part this is a book written by a horror fan for horror fans, and the author's redemption comes when he just allows himself the enjoy the silliness of many of the listed movies or admires the creepy aspects of unsung classics.
Not as entertaining as a Joe Bob Briggs book, but still worth a read, for horror fans.
