High-spirited horse trainer Jessica Stanson stumbles into the perfect job on one of the most elite ranches in Montana. Or at least it would be if her boss, ex-detective Michael Carven, stopped acting like he didn't want her there. Jessica has to prove herself to him on the ranch, and also try to penetrate his armor to get to the man inside. Michael Carven is a man who has left a difficult past behind him, and now works at his dream job raising horses under the Montana sky. But he knows that the past has a way of coming back to him, and soon enough, it does. A wave of violence hits the nearby small town of Riverside, nestled deep in the mountains, as a cunning serial killer preys on the population. Against his will, Michael finds himself both drawn into the case and coming to care for his independent new trainer. And if having a killer on the loose wasn't enough, his two worlds collide when Jessica becomes the only material witness in the case. Before it is over, Michael and Jessica will put everything they know and hold dear on the line to catch a vicious, cunning killer - and to protect each other as well.

Talk about Five Star Expressions - Fatal Embrace

Micheal Carven starts this book out with his POV coming home after a couple of days of hard work then throws himself into another day with no sleep. He has a shock meeting 'Jess' Stanson the new head horse trainer because he thinks that it is a man.
Surprise! It's a woman, a beautiful woman. Micheal quickly tries to fire her because he doesn't want to live and work with a beautiful woman, we don't know much about him or his motivations, but after arguing he ends up keeping her. Plus, I believe she'd have a solid case against him for sexual discrimination!
Micheal hires Jess because he is taking on a new serial killer case for the local police, he retired three years ago when his own fiance was horribly murdered and he never found the killer.
This all goes down in a small town in Montana (aren't they all small in that state?) in this contemporary mystery-romance. The killer was a BIG surprise because I usually can guess who-done-it, but this time I was more then a mile off... I won't spoil the big surprise and when I look back it makes sense because Jess never meet the person even though that person is around everywhere just like he threatens! So good! This is romance and not erotic so you can expect a good story that is well written.

The most incredible part of this story was the relationship between the two main characters, Michael and Jess. The plot itself was well done, and I did not see the ending coming at all. In fact, I'd say it was one of the biggest surprises in a suspense/mystery plot that I've read recently. The story structure itself had quite a bit of head-hopping (going from one point of view to another) and this became annoying. There were also large sections of "telling" where the author could have greatly improved the story by "showing" me instead. In some cases she did "show", and then "told" anyway. There is also some strong language. Yet what captured me and made me overlook all of that was that this is a true love story. It was more than a romance. (It does contain sex scenes.) Instead, it was as if Michael and Jess fell in love without realizing that's what was happening, and that was beautifully done. I'd go even further to say they are one of my favorite fictional character couples from recent days and for that reason alone, I recommend this book. I appreciated the Epilogue at the end because otherwise, I'd have felt a little too much like I was left hanging. A wonderful read!

I have to admit...the mystery of the serial killer kept me guessing. I really had no clue who it was and that alone was enough to keep me turning the pages. At one moment I thought it was one person the next page another...I really couldn't figure it out. I'm not always looking for kink and funk in my romance so I was just fine with the romance in this book. It was slow developing, sure, but sometimes that's half the thrill of a new relationship.
What I didn't like was the summery of the killer and the why. There was this big build up to who it was and the final "show down" and it all seemed to happen in one short chapter. The chase through the house was over as fast as it started. For this killer to have been so cunning, he/she sure missed the mark as far as Jess was concerned...and this killer should have had the easiest time with her out of all the others he/she killed because he/she sure did spend a lot of time stalking Jess and getting to know her.
I liked this book. Yeah, maybe it was not my favorite by far but it was still a good, fun and exciting read that took me to the brink of danger and back.

When I started reading this book, I found it fairly entertaining. However, as the story progressed, it seemed like the author had trouble developing the characters and the mystery. The main character's behavior was erratic and the romance seemed bland. The mystery never developed into anything very suspenseful. In the end, the author didn't bother explaining much to the reader about the murders and the reasons behind them, almost has if the author didn't have good explanations herself. Even if this novel is free, it's not worth wasting your time on it considering the disappointing ending.

I thought Fatal Embrace was a great book. It's a great romantic suspense involving a former detective and horse trainer. I like the way the author brought these two together. Jess is spunky, funny, and loves her job. Michael, who is unhappy with the events that have happened in his life, is a little tough to get along with. Needless to say these two have alot of issues to work out. My favorite funny part of the book is when Michael takes Jess to a fundraiser and she dances with a man she does not want to. Once you read that part you will understand what I mean. We've all been in that situtation!!!! I also liked this book because at the end your not left wondering or needing to buy another book to find out how it ends! With the right actors this book would make a great Lifetime Movie. If you like Romantic Suspense then purchase this one.

I enjoyed reading Fatal Embrace and especially liked one of the main characters, Jessica Stanson. Jessica had a great sense of humor and I enjoyed her bantering and sarcastic wit. The second main character, Michael Carven, was also likeable but was a bit passive/aggressive in his treatment of Jessica throughout a good part of the book which began to annoy me. Michael was formerly a detective but gave it up to run his ranch full time when his fiance was murdered. His former partner, Dan, brings him back to help investigate a series of murders of young women because of Michael's talent in helping solve this type of crime. The mystery was good and while I was pretty close at guessing "whodunit", I was a little surprised when I came to the end. Recommend for readers who like a mystery with a little romance.
