Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are uniquely suited to miniaturized free-space optical systems in which surface-mounting and hybrid assembly techniques can be used to combine different technologies together. Two examples are described of such microsystems that are being developed for sensing applications. The first example is an optical position sensing system for rotating parts. Progress on fabricating similar system by flip-chip bonding techniques is then discussed.

A high-quality single mode beam is desirable for the efficient use of lasers as light sources for optical data communications and interconnects. This work shows a parametric study of the beam quality of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs).

But the 850 nm GaAs quantum well VCSELs that make up most of present product are highly vulnerable to dislocation networks. In this paper, we discuss how materials selection affects the reliability of semiconductor lasers generally. We then describe the most common failure mechanisms observed in VCSELs, and what precautions are used to prevent them. We finish with a brief discussion of reliability testing and failure analysis. Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are key components enabling power- and cost-efficient, high-density, ultra-high bandwidth parallel optical interconnects for data center and high-performance computing applications. This paper presents recent developments at TE Connectivity (TE) in the area of 25 Gb/s per channel-class VCSEL and optical transmitter technology for applications such as 100G and 400G Ethernet and Enhanced Data Rate InfiniBand pluggable and mid-board connectivity solutions.

The dynamics of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with isotropic optical feedback from a distant reflector is studied experimentally and numerically. Low-frequency fluctuations with sudden drop-outs of power are found to be qualitatively independent of the amount of excitation of the second polarization component. The latter is shown to be controlled to a great extent by the intrinsic dichroism of the solitary laser. The experimental findings are in very good qualitative agreement with simulations.
