Talk about The Magic Anatomy Book

I am a physician and read this book to both my daughters when they were about 3-6 years; they are both in college now (2009) and recently one of them asked if she could have the book so she could read it to her children someday. She is pre-med and remembers the joy of adventure in The Magic Anatomy Book. As the book I owned had been dedicated to my oldest daughter, not knowing another child would be coming and would want a copy I searched on Amazon and found the book out of print so I had to buy a used book--actually I bought 2 because a stepdaughter wanted a copy to read to our young grandchildren.

The Magic Anatomy Book was written by a medical illustrator. The story begins when two young children go into their grandmother's attic on a stormy day and they suddenly find themselves reduced to miniature people who are swallowed by a human whose image they were looking at in an anatomy book found in the attic. And there begins a magical journey through the body, guided by Freewillie, a water droplet (for those in the medical field they would recognize that Freewillie is a play on the medical term "free water"). The images of organs etc is highly accurate and the kids really get into the adventure of it all.

The book is one that is best read over a period of time. I intentionally limited the read to just a few pages each night and turned to simpler children's books to finish the read before I kissed them good night.

I wish this book were back in print !!
One of the best books in the world!
I bought this book new around 20 years ago to read to my daughter. She didn't go into medicine, but she now knows more about the body than most med students. About 10 years ago I bought a used copy for my son so he can have one for his kids too.
I made reading this book mandatory reading for High School Biology. There is enough information in this book to pass beginning college-level courses.
While reading this book you will be able to picture terms like epiglottis, inferior vena caba, tricuspid valve, fovea, axon, white blood cells, neurons, adrenals, mitochondria, lysosomes, and the ever-memorable mitosis and macrophage. This book is worth buying for the artwork, but the story ties it all together and makes you remember the science due to the cliff-hangers and artwork.
There are a couple of pages of the book that teach evolution; I skip those pages when I read the book.
I wish this book would go back into print. I would buy another copy, even though I already own two.
I accidentally ran over this page on Amazon, and was unpleasantly surprised by the chilly editorial review posted along. I received this book as a present when I was six and read it all in one day. It effortlessly gave me tons of information about the way human body functions. And since all this new knowledge was "wrapped" in a story, it stayed in my head, instead of just getting "in and out". Right now my six and a half year old son reads this book, and it impresses him not least than it impressed me when I was a child. He catches every moment to grab this book. He reads it effortlessly. He spends lots of time studying the great illustrations. And I can see him learning a lot from this book. In my opinion, this is the best way to present science to children, and I can only wish there were more books of this kind.
I read this book myself when I was 8-9 years old, and absolutely loved it. Just recently I found out that my friend has been reading this book to her 4 yo, and he loves it. The adventurous character of the book totally hides the fact that it is incredibly educational and informative. The books includes a handy glossary of terms in the back, so even clueless parents (like my friend) will not be at a loss when kids ask for a deeper explanation. I highly recommend it for all kids and their parents! sliver
Nothing is better to teach your 4-10 years old kids Human Anatomy and Physiology and Reading (!!!). My sons red it both in Russian and in English. Platon (DOB: 1994) without very good practice in riding started to read the book himself and did not stop till finish it in 3 days! Even if your child can not read yet, you can read the book for him. You'll be amazed how the adventures of kids and cat inside the human body will be interesting for not just for your kid but for you also. Children like to know about human body and 4 years old child is not too young do discuss it. It is a very wise book. We are going to buy and present the book to our friends.
I read this book when I was a kid and I still remember and impressed by the way the book is written and illustrated. It is very easy and interesting to read. Great book, you will not regret buying it and your kids will be so greatful!
