Murder Being Once Done is a novel by British crime-writer Ruth Rendell, first published in 1972. It is the seventh entry in her popular Inspector Wexford series. A girl with no name, no possessions and no past, is found murdered in a vast, overgrown London cemetery.

Not yet. But I’ll tell you about it, shall I? Funny, isn’t it, the way I said I didn’t suppose I’d ever have to identify him? But I did identify him last night. On the previous evening, Howard had attempted to call his uncle at seven but the line had been engaged.

Talk about Murder Being Once Done and Shake Hands Forever

This is one of my favorite Inspector Wexford mysteries. For one, the officious and annoying Mike Burden isn't there, which is a relief. This novel offers a very humorous depiction of Wexford struggling to stay on his diet and off murder investigations. Of course, he can't help himself and go back to solving a murder mystery that practically falls into his lap. There are some hilarious exchanges between Wexford and his nephew who is also a police officer and whom Wexford suspects of being a snob for a while.

The mystery itself is very good. I didn't guess what was going on until the very end. The characters are quirky and fascinating. In short, this is Rendell at her best delivering one of the undisputed classics in the Inspector Wexford series.
I am hcv men
In this especially good story, Rendell makes Inspector Wexford the main character so that the reader acquires an in depth picture of him as a person and a policeman whose ability to analyse the people involved make him an indomitable problem solver. This insight into Rendell's sleuth makes this book a must read for her fans!
Bit of a dark depressing story. No mystery as to 'who dunnit' - the mystery was in whether the poor person who had been set up would spend time in gaol for murder or would something happen to point the finger at the real culprit. Book a bit boring in parts - but still I could not put it down. I'm a fan of Ruth Rendell and her many different types of stories and characters - however - still prefer the Wexford mysteries.
Ruth Rendell was a master of her craft. Always feel immersed in the lives of Inspector Wexford, his co-workers, and family. And it is usually challenging to try to solve the crimes, too. While there is some sexual content, there are no graphic sexual scenes, just mostly mild references.
ruth rendell never disappoints me. she is a page turner. i love inspector wexford and have a crush on mike burden. i was sorry about his wife though. i re-read ruth rendell all the time.
I'm sorry to say I did not enjoy this book as it was was just not a real wexford story wrong town no crew and not feeling well am hoping the next book will be back on track
Well written. Like the plots. Good characters. I would recommend any of the books in this series, especially people who like English mysteries.
Ruth Rendell is in a class all by herself!

You can't go wrong with one of her creations.
