Skinwalkers is the seventh crime fiction novel in the Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee Navajo Tribal Police series by author Tony Hillerman published in 1986. Skinwalkers was adapted for television for the PBS Mystery! series in 2002. Murders are happening all over the huge reservation, and Lt. Leaphorn can see no pattern. Then someone makes an attempt on Jim Chee's life, and the two work together for the first time to solve these crimes.

His mystery novels are set in the Four Corners area of New Mexico and Arizona. The protagonists are Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee of the Navajo tribal police. Lt. Leaphorn was introduced in Hillerman's first novel, The Blessing Way (1970). The second book in the series, Dance Hall of the Dead (1973), won a 1974 Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Novel.

This is the seventh Leaphorn and Chee novel Tony Hillerman penned. The first three, The Blessing Way(#1), Dance Hall of the Dead(#2), and Listening Woman(#3), were Leaphorn stand alones and the forth, People of Darkness, first introduced Chee as a lead. The Dark Wind(#5) and The Ghostway(#6) continue with Chee operating solo. It is not until this novel, Skinwalkers(#7), that Leaphorn and Chee finally join up.
As the book opens reality comes crashing in on Jim as three shotgun blasts tear thru the wall of his trailer shredding the bed that he was in minutes ago until a feral cat he had befriended began acting strangely and woke him up. He has been distracted by the split with his girlfriend who has left town and seems to be doing her best to keep distancing herself from Jim, who is obsessed by the whole affair. On this subject he may be a sap, but he's our sap.
Meanwhile Joe Leaphorn is puzzled by a string of unusual homicides that don't fit the normal rez pattern. His wife is impacted by a debilitating disease that will only get worse until it finally kills her. To say Leaphorn is heartsick hardly does him justice.
Coincidences are allowed in fiction as in real life and wouldn't you know it the two cases gradually converge and Joe Leaphorn might just have to decide that his opinion of Jim Chee as an undisciplined flake was a bit harsh and Chee might decide that Leaphorn isn't quite as much the severe drone as he had thought. Who knows, if they keep this up they may even end up as friends, might take a few more books before they reach that point though.
What isn't in doubt is that you get a full dose of Tony Hillerman's mellow southwest vibe combined with likable characters tied together with solid writing. Of the eighteen Chee/Leaphorn novels that Hillerman wrote before he died in 2008 this is one of the half dozen I continue to reread every few years.

In this book we learn all about Navajo witches – how a person become one, how witches infect people with illnesses, and what it takes to reverse their witchcraft. Lots of people die in the name of witchcraft. Not even the police are immune from accusations of witching.

Someone tries to kill Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police. Gunshots riddle his trailer one dark night. This gets the attention of legendary tribal policeman Lieutenant Leaphorn. Fans of Hillerman's Navajo mysteries (like me) have met both these clever cops in previous books. It's fun to see them start working together, despite some distrust on both sides.

Both Leaphorn and Chee are struggling with personal problems. Leaphorn fears his beloved wife has Alzheimer's. Chee is hoping his white girlfriend will come back from Wisconsin and follow the Navajo way with him. Their personal dramas add depth to the story.

These books always give a fascinating picture of clan relationships. Even the names of the clans are enchanting.

Animal lovers will enjoy Chee's thoughtful relationship with a tourist's abandoned pet – a Manx cat that's hanging around his trailer.

Skinwalkers is a particularly engaging book in the series, because of the exotic and dangerous doings of the witch and the bewitched.

watching to future

In this book Hillerman doesn't disappoint the fans of his desert murder mystery/Navajo witch series. He puts a really interesting twist on Navajo witches and, while I won't spoil it for you, let's just say it involves skittish feral cat who becomes a life saver, perplexing murders, mysterious bones, and captivating Southwestern scenery. What else could you ask for?

Tony Hillerman always spins an intriguing tale, dropping hints along the way, but never revealing too much, and never confusing the reader. His stories weave in Navajo (and other tribes') culture, apparently with accuracy, as he was awarded the Navajo Tribe's Special Friend Award, as well as the Center for the American Indian's Ambassador Award. The American Southwest is as much a character in his mysteries as the people are; his enticing descriptions of sacred landscapes and weather further his stories at every step. Although the principal characters are developed from book to book, each separate title stands alone as well. A gratifying series.

I have the series in paperback, but it is nice to have some of them for my Kindle Fire. Excellent series. It still saddens me that this fine story teller is gone. These books are my little treat to myself to stay awhile with old friends in a very different landscape from the green hills of the home I love. He made me love that southwest landscape, with his words.
