I picked up Jill Uris and Leon Uris’ Ireland A Terrible Beauty with the intention of giving it a quick skim; the book is part of my dad’s motley collection of old Irish stuff that he’s decorated the camp in Maine with. Uris' subsequent works included: Mila 18, a story of the Warsaw ghetto uprising; Armageddon: A Novel of Berlin, which reveals the detailed work by British and American intelligence services in planning for the occupation and pacification of post WWII Germany; Trinity, an epic novel about Ireland's struggle for independence; QB VII, a novel about the role of a Polish doctor in a.

Leave telling the story of Ireland to the Irish. Leon Uris and his wife had travelled through Ireland in the 70’s and he wrote the text, she took the photos. 3 people found this helpful. During those travels he conceived the idea for his wonderful books, Trinity and it’s sequel, Redemption which I also recommend. Honestly, this is just a beautiful book and one I think you’d be happy to have in your own library.

This book is gorgeous and is quite literally about the 12th copy I’ve purchased over the years.

When this book first came out in the 70’s I must have bought 2 or 3 copies a year. I’m of Irish heritage (2nd gen) and I gave this book as a gift to various relatives and friends. The hardback copy. Then, a lovely softcover version was published so I gave those copies as gifts and for a while it became VERY difficult to find the hardback books without spending a small fortune. I had given my personal copy of the hard cover version to a dear friend and when he passed, his brother told me it had been one of my friends favorite books. So the brother and his family have it now which is exactly where it should be.

I was going through my book collection not long ago and although I have the soft cover I thought I’d see if there were copies of this version for sale. I was so delighted to see that Amazon had it and the price was easily affordable at this point. So...here we are.

Leon Uris and his wife had travelled through Ireland in the 70’s and he wrote the text, she took the photos. During those travels he conceived the idea for his wonderful books, “Trinity” and it’s sequel, “Redemption” which I also recommend.

Really interesting book. Photos and description of Ireland - religion, culture, etc. - at that point in time are excellent. Loved "Trinity" and this book really complements it. I always recommend "Trinity" to people who ask about the history of Ireland. It covers the entire 900 years of British rule and it's aftermath extremely well.

It was this book that inspired me a the age of 13 to be a photographer. Now in my fifties, I never tire of falling into Ms. Uris' captures of Ireland, its people and the amazing landscapes. Such an apt title.
