And Tree Mother's hair was whiter and morefeathery than either. Her eyes were dark like the Tree Man's, onlykeener and softer, both. And in spite of her being a grandmother herface was brown and golden like a young out-of-door girl's, and she wasslim and quick and more than beautiful. Eric stood beside Ivra, his facelifted up to the Tree Mother's, aglow and quivering. The Tree Mother said verylittle on the long ride, but her presence was enough. The three werealmost trembling for joy, for the Tree Mother's companionship is rare, and one of the splendidest things that can happen to a Forest Person. The minute they were in the boat, it shot up and away towards home.

A wonderful fantasy written by Ethel Cook Eliot, first. com User, August 15, 2009. This is the most beautiful story I have yet read to my children. It was hard for me to put down-not usually the case-so I read much later into the night than is typical. It tells of an 8 year old embarking on a magical journey through the forest interacting with the people and creatures she finds there.

4 children from 2 through 8 and we all enjoyed this. The idea of clear eyes presenting a different world to the holder is real magic at all our grasps. I and my children will hold on tight to what we have learned from this author.
*Note for aware children who are very empathetic*
The story begins of an orphan girl whom is unhappily placed and treated.
The story incorporates a beautiful witch that tries to collect children.
My children have a terrible time watching children movies as they find them to be too scary and intense. They did not have any trouble at all with the intense parts in this book. I was surprised.
I don't know exactly what the difference was except to mention that the children in the story held the power of the scariness. The author weaves it all together in confidence and empowerment towards the children.
Beautiful!
So grateful!

We loved this book. It was our night time read to our twins boys age 8. The story of Hepatica and the other characters in the forest will keep kids and parents interested throughout the entire book. So glad to have found Ethel Cook Eliot, she has a special place in our home library and will be reading The Wind Boy next. I would recommend this book for any nature-loving family and especially for Waldorf teachers and homeschool families.

I loved this book, and can't wait to read it to the many children I know. A few are old enough (probably need to be at least 5 or 6) and I eagerly await the rest becoming old enough to appreciate it fully. A fabulous tale, filled with truth and love and light. All ages will love it.

This is a beautiful book. My 8 year old Grandaughter loves it. The audio version is very well done. We bought the CD but own the book as well. Money well spent. I can't get this one at my local library. I think maybe it was out of print for so long that people aren't as familiar with it any more. A lovely fairy story !
