The tunnel was being built for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California by the Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company. A book by Janette Zavattero. The . mile, 18-foot diameter tunnel was intended to carry water from the State Water Project into Southern California. To this day, it remains one of the worst tunnel disasters in California and it led to passage of the toughest mining and tunnel regulations in the country. The sealed portal of the abandoned tunnel, and stacked concrete water pipe sections, can be seen from Fenton Ave near Maclay St in Sylmar, 30 miles north of the marker. 1st ed. by Janette Zavattero. Sylmar is the northernmost neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Historically known for its profusion of olive orchards, Sylmar can trace its past to the 18th century and the founding of the San Fernando Mission. In 1890 olive production was begun in a systematic manner. The Sylmar climate was also considered healthy, and so a sanitarium was established, the first in a series of hospitals in the neighborhood. There are fourteen public and eight private schools within Sylmar.

Some important history lessons here: O.S.H.A. was once an organization that did not have the power to issue fines, or shut-down dangerous jobs, like they do today. This disaster changed that. - - This was a major event, but it is mostly forgotten today. - - A major construction contractor went bankrupt after this happened, a division of Lockheed Aircraft Corp. - - The deaths were indirectly caused by the February 9 1971 Sylmar Earthquake, as a result of explosive gasses released underground. - - The tunnel site is still there today, closed, abandoned, and forgotten. Sections of concrete pipe are stacked up, ready to install, since 41 years ago.

This book has an excellent storyline and is about real people. It explains how the big corporations and the politicians try to cover up all the problems they make themselves. Then, turn it around to blame on the little guy as an escapegoat in order not to get blamed themselves. This book has a lot of technical information involving tunnels and is a must-read book for someone in the trades. I would recommend this book to everyone. Excellent reading!!!

A compelling account of a few men who stood tall for 17 dead workmen. Their uncompromising fight to for truth resulted in laws being changed that have saved hundreds of lives. I was hoping for maps and phots that could better illustrate the geographic features of the tunnel length. Writer got a little tooliose with some metaphors but an informative reading none the less
