Talk about U-Boat: The Secret Menace

You have to hand it to the German Navy during WW2, They had a deadly weapon in the U boat. But the men who waited for death in those boats had the courage to do so, A very good read.
Ballentine's books on WWII are great! I have many. Good for history lovers and WWII interests.
Great communication. Satisfied with purchase.
McDonald Publishing and the Imperial War Museum teamed up back in the late 1960s and early 1970s to publish this tight series of illustrated paperbacks on the history of World War I, World War II (and a few other conflicts of the 20th century), which were picked up by Ballantine in the United States. They were all divided into subjects: battles, campaigns, weapons, war leaders, politics in action, human conflict, and regalia, by color bands on the bottom, enjoying common editing and artwork, and a fairly common collection of well-known historians. They cost $1 at the time (a good deal of money) and a lot more now (being out of print).

The series as a whole is slightly outdated by the disclosures from Allied codebreaking, and suffered from being whipped together in a hurry, but they remain then and now a fine introduction to conflict in the 20th century -- if you can find them.

David Mason's entry on U-Boats was the first volume in the "Weapons" series, which was the largest section of it, and the book doubles as a history of the U-Boat war and the submarine itself, replete with charts on how they dive and surface. The text is comprehensive but in a tiny font, which might require an older reader like myself to use a magnifying glass to read it. If you can put up with that, you'll find a gripping account of the submarine war.

The only weakness in the book is that it was written and published before the ULTRA revelations, so the role of British codebreaking in defeating the U-Boats, which is something up with which the reader must put.

The photographs are up to the usual high standards. There aren't too many maps, as the U-Boat war didn't generate too many arrows on a map, and there aren't too many personal accounts, but as a strong -- if dated -- introduction to the Battle of the Atlantic, this book stands up quite well.
Read this piece back in college and still enjoy reading it from time to time. Provided a great comprehensive insight into the scourge of the Atlantic that was the German U-boat. So much is covered and examined on matters I didn't even know about such as the specialized tanker U-boats to attack the eastern seaboard and gulf of mexico or the lacking readiness the u-boat fleet was when war began in 1939 yet they wreaked havoc on British convoys so early on in the war. It offers a great exposition and insight from the personal accounts as well as the strategic view of the U-boats had in its effect on the allies and in the struggle to maintain that scourge for the Germans. Highly recommended and for a good price. There is no such thing as a used book.
I read this book, here in Brazil. This book is an introduction about U-boats, the nazi Germany's submarines in World War II.Some chapters, including one chapter about U-boat's defeat, in may 1943.Last chapter is about the last U-boats, in 1945.
For me, this introduction was good.I read this book in less than one day. This book has many photos; all of them black & white photos. If you want a good introduction about U-boats, this book is a good choice.
Failures of this book are small. To example, there's no graphics about U-boats victories or defeats. This book is for me and I suppose also for you.If you aren't an expert about U-boat, this book is a short and easy to read introduction.
An outstanding book, highly underated and one of the best ive read on the subject.

This book is more than an introduction, and covers the overall deployment and battle of the uboat war, it details tactics used i.e the wolf pack method ect., why the uboats were so effective, includes tonnage charts, and why british naval developements bought about the downfall of Hitler's submarine fleets.

An excellent book, unlike other books that cover individual actions, submarines or battles, this studies the entire conflict, and its results.

Highly recommended!

(So good I own 2 copies :) )
