Fabulous old 1960's volume, received, startlingly, in like-new condition. Some have complained here that the musical tips within are "too much in a 1960's, Mancini style". Wull....umm....YEAH? As they would be, and that's the beauty of the book, as Mancini was a superlative pop/jazz arranger, and any modern arranger does well to learn what stylish magic he was able to create with different voicings and sonorities. The book comes with three, double-sided, 5" 33-1/3 vinyl records, protected in paper sleeves, which give aural examples of the many musical phrases Mancini describes in the book, arranged in his unique style, so you'll have to scare up an old vinyl-style turntable to play them. My records seem never to have been played at all, so pristine are they. I transferred mine to digital immediately and have them saved to hard-disk for future reference. I personally adore the fab MCM fontfaces and colors on the cover of the book, too. This is a real gem, and my copy, printed in the early 60's, was lucky to be in superb condition; almost as though fate had saved it just for me.

This is a really fun read, you get Mancini talking to you over a cup of coffee.
The book is not about composing, it is about orchestration and constructing
different sounds with an orchestra. Like you might today read a tutorial
about getting different sounds out of a synth, Mancini's synth has its own special
strengths, weaknesses, and occasional bits of humanity to deal with (he has a
nice side-rant about electric bass players becoming primadonnas). And it is
beautifully printed on nice big paper. Enjoy a weekend with Mancini.

OK, People, listen up! This IS NOT a text book on elementary arranging or on music theory. This is a totally outstanding instruction manual on how and why Mancini wrote and arranged HIS music so the reader could understand his methods. This book assumes you have studied music and elementary arranging, and know how to play an instrument and put spots on charts. If you have listened to Mancini's work and want to know how and why he did what he did, for example why "Walk On The Wild Side", or any of his other works, sounds so cool, then this is the book for you. Well worth the price.

I bought this book before learning any of the technical aspects of arranging, and it left me wanting more. After I found the books that cover the techniques of arranging, I went back to this book and found it way more beneficial.

You get to 1.) read Mr. Mancini's commentary about a particular score example, then 2.) listen to a CD of the example while looking at the score. Not every example comes with an audio track, but the CD has well over 50 tracks, so you still get an abundance of examples to see AND hear. To be able to see the brass/sax/French horn voicings at the end of 'Peter Gunn Theme' and the string and horn parts in 'Mr. Lucky' is pretty amazing.

So, if you know basic techniques of writing for several instruments and sections, and you'd like to see and hear how a master of the craft puts it all to use, consider this book a worthwhile investment.

If only it had the vocal arrangement to 'Bachelor In Paradise', but that's just me being greedy.

I bought this book to replace my original, purchased in college for a music arranging class. It was excellent then, and has not diminished any in years since. Henry Mancini was a master composer/arranger, from whom I will probably never stop learning. I am only sorry I never had the chance to meet him in person.

I found it very helpful. The fact that the book came with recorded examples on CD made the book worth the money!

This was purchased as a gift for our son. It is relatively high level music theory so that part was not as interesting to him, but the music is fun and her generally likes it.
Nice book
