Trained as a navigator and eager for adventure, in 1874 Louis John Frederick Iaeger boarded the clipper St. John in New York to begin his career at sea. At the same time, he began the diaries presented here, in which he vividly described his sea journey, his disenchantment with the harsh realities of the sea, and his return to the land. Still an adventurer, "Billy the Bear" (as he became known) dabbled in acting, worked with Buffalo Bill, drove cattle in Wyoming, and ultimately was a founding father of the wild and wooly town of Chadron, Nebraska. If you want to know what the sea and life in the West was really like, you don't want to miss The Diaries of "Billy the Bear" Iaeger!
