com User, October 13, 1997. Few books on the "Wild West" go into as much detail on specific characters as these sets of books do ( there are two others: the Lawmen and the Outlaws). Although sometimes I find these books 'dry', they are incredible references.

This is a list of Old West gunfighters, referring to outlaws or lawmen, of the American frontier who gained fame or notoriety during the American Wild West or Old West. Some listed were never gunfighters. The term gunslinger is a modern, 20th-century invention, often used in cinema or other media to refer to men in the American Old West who had gained a reputation as being dangerous with a gun. A gunfighter may or may not be an outlaw or a lawman.

Talk about The Gunfighters: James Horan's Authentic Wild West

Worla
James D. Horan painstakingly documents happenings in the Old (and Yes...Wild) West in his Authentic Wild West Series. Footnotes and references are numerous. Photos (many from his personal collection!) and original documents, newspapers, personal accounts, and other texts bring history alive. Horan was one of the first of the historians to attempt to give a realistic and "unvarnished" opinion of America's Wild West during the late 19th century. His writing is easy-to-follow, and pages are filled with photos and copies of the documents from the day. Sometimes the accounts read directly from the original documents are as enlightening as the text...and Horan plans his style that way. Horan often debunks the heroists of the day and the traditions built upon portrayals by dime store novelists. Horan was a historical story teller decades ago before it made fashionable by Bob Boze Bell, Ambrose and McCullough. Unfortunately, Horan is no longer around and his books are reprinted sporadically. This volume of the Authentic Wild West Series by Horan is a good addition to your library. Pick up a good copy of all three volumes (including The Lawmen and The Outlaws), while you can find them.

Mr. Horan is a good researcher, and has given good background into the lives of some of our more famous gunmen of the early west. The movies and popular novels lead us astray unless we are willing to forego parts of the folklore that has built up over the years. This book deals with how the men were involved in the lives they seemed destined to endure.
