Talk about Grouse and Grouse Hunting

I can't believe no one else has reviewed this book. Either Grouse hunting is no longer an appealing subject or all the true Grousemen have already read it long ago. I suspect the former. In any case for those of you who have not read this classic it is the
book to read if you are interested in pursuing Grouse. Woolner informs the reader of all the necessary facts required to go out, find the type of cover where Grouse will hold, the types of food they cherish and the tactics needed to bring one of these beautiful birds to hand. If you could only read one "how to" book on the subject this is the one I recommend!

It's OK but short on hunting stories. Good summary of grouse ecology.
Zeus Wooden
Outstanding observations of an experienced hunter and conservationist about perhaps the finest game bird in the United States

First purchased and read this book in the 70s. Recently found a copy and brought it mostly out of nostalgia, but after leafing through and reading chapters here and there, I remember how as a teenager I loved this book and still think this is one of the all time great grouse hunting books. Love his writing style, no nonsense way of putting things. Tonight (it is now 3:20 am) I pulled it off the shelf and just now finished reading the chapter on grouse guns and I truly enjoyed the way he talked about his preferences, those of some of his peers and, being a safety conscious person, his comments on gun safety, one sentence "A shotgun, at close range, is more lethal than a machine gun. I am familiar with both". says it all about his style: wrote what was on his mind and a pure statement afterwords "I am familiar with both". The man wrote it the way he saw it.
A bit dated but Woolner writes well and the book is a quick read. He hunted the New England uplands during at least a portion of the glory days for grouse hunters. Woolner covers grouse ecology and grouse hunting history including some interesting second hand information on the earlier New England market hunters. Imagine grouse being plentiful enough to make hunting them commercially viable for a portion of the year. Times have changed.
