I'll keep it short and sweet.
I enjoyed this book. An interesting, well told story.
You'll get the feeling that it seems a little familiar, as it includes all the elements that you'd expect from a crime story based around two homicide detectives in New York. However, if that's what you're in to then that's no bad thing.
I'd happily read what Ellie Hatcher gets up to next. :-)

Love all her books, wish she would write more.

City of Fear follows the murder investigation into the gruesome killing of Chelsea Hart, a young college student from Indiana, after a night out in one of Manhattan's elite nightclubs. NYPD detective Allie Hatcher, the new girl on the block, becomes lead investigator into the killing when she stumbles across Chelsea's body on her daily early morning run in the park. But what seems a straightforward investigation at first soon turns into something more sinister when Allie connects the case to three previously unsolved murders which show uncanny similarities to Chelsea's case. This puts her at loggerheads with her superior, who is convinced that their suspect is already in custody. Do they have the right man, or must Allie keep looking for a serial killer still on the loose?

I had the audio version of the book and it made my daily commute to work a lot more enjoyable as I listened to the investigation unfold. Despite a relatively predicable plot and characters that were somewhat cliche'd, the twists in the story line mimicked the dead ends and fresh leads of a real murder investigation, and the ending tied up the lose ends sufficiently to satisfy my curiosity.

Just note that this apparently is the second book of a series, which explained references to Allie's history which made little sense to me and which were never fully explained - although they were not essential for following the story in this novel.

I might have enjoyed the book less in print, but it made a good companion to the 120km round trip to work every day. All in all it was an enjoyable whodunnit, and whilst I could predict some of the events before they occurred and guessed who the "perp" was before all was revealed, I enjoyed following the twists and turns of the plot as Allie's investigation progressed. 3 1/2 stars, not for literary brilliance, but for entertainment value and for keeping me awake after a night shift!
