As a pediatric dentist, this book needs a little revision. The room they show him go back to "like a spaceship" looks terrifying. I bought it to do a preschool presentation and luckily read it in advance. I had to "edit" and skip a couple of pages when they show the dentist giving him a SHOT! Big no-no in my world!! And then it talks about "drilling" on a tooth. Maybe would be fine for older kids, but I was surprised to see that picture of a needle and see the word "drill." There are a lot of other ways these things could be phrased and portrayed.

I bought this book for my 6 year old, after he developed anxiety about going to the dentist. He didn't have any problems before, but then he had to have a tooth extracted and the anxiety went crazy. Earlier this year he needed sealants, and he refused to even open his mouth for the dentist to LOOK. His cleaning was coming up last week and I wanted to help ease his anxieties and remind him that he doesn't have to be afraid. He enjoyed this book and loved that he could relate to little critter getting a cavity filled, just like he has. He did well at his appointment, and I give some credit to this book - it opened up the conversation and helped him to feel acknowledged. As always, Mercer Mayer did an awesome job. The book arrived in excellent condition and right on time.

Such a cute book! I love that it doesn't treat the dentist as something fearful, like some other childrens' books. I don't mind talking to my son about his fear if he is afraid, but I don't want him to learn that he SHOULD be afraid. My only complaint is that it is a bit outdated, but it's so good that I don't mind. We'll just talk about the differences too!

Update- My son LOVES this book, especially finding the frog and spider on all the pages. Buy it, buy it!

This is a great book to teach little ones what to expect at the dentist. However, I am a dental hygienist and I do not appreciate how it refers to everyone who is not the dentist as a nurse. Other than that its a great informative read with great illustrations!

It's a pretty dated book. I think most children will be accompanied by their parent, especially if it's the first visit. It also references a drill. I'm 29 and I don't like the word "drill" associated with dental care. I'm sure my 3 year old doesn't feel any differently. I will still read the book to my son but I'll just edit out the parts I don't like.

What can I say? I love Mercer Mayer. I love his narration. His illustrations. And the price of his work. This book is both informative and entertaining, as all Mecer's work is. (Yes, I used his first name. I'm one of those dillusional fan types who think my admiration for him puts us on a personal name basis. Tongue out! Tee hee...)

I purchased this to read to my son who was scheduled for his first dentist visit. He was really nervous about his dentist appointment and wanted to read this book over and over up until his visit. I think that it helped prepare him for the visit (which went very smoothly!). The book did a great job of explaining everything to expect.
