Baltimore State Hospital For The Criminally Insane, located in Baltimore, Maryland, is a state facility housing the criminally insane and those whose sanity is being evaluated for the criminal justice system. The general administrator of the hospital was Dr. Frederick Chilton. One notable patient was Abel Gideon, who murdered a nurse in cold blood. Abel also "operated" on his keeper on a local anesthetic.

Premodern hospitals, according to many scholars, existed mainly as refuges for the desperately poor and sick .

Premodern hospitals, according to many scholars, existed mainly as refuges for the desperately poor and sick, providing patients with little or no medical care. Challenging this view in a compelling survey of hospitals in the East Roman Empire, Timothy Miller traces the birth and development of Byzantine xenones, or hospitals, from their emergence in the fourth century to their decline in the fifteenth century, just prior to the Turkish conquest of Constantinople. These sophisticated medical facilities, he concludes, are the true ancestors of modern hospitals

My mom wanted this book for Christmas. Was glad I could find it on Amazon since it is an older book. I ended up
reading up to page 179 before giving it to her. Very interesting. Will have to finish it later. Thanks Amazon!!

The shoe leather treatment: The inspiring story of Bill Thomas's triumphant nine-year fight for survival in a state hospital for the criminally insane as told to S. L. Stebel

It has been quite an experience to personally have known Bill Thomas for the past 38+ years. We lived together, worked together, and are still the best of friends after all these years. It is my deepest desire to keep this book on the shelves for the wonderful insight he has retained all these years, that others may realize that they can go on living happily and healthfully for the years that lie ahead as Bill has managed to do, all the time passing it on to the rest of us.

I know Mr. Thomas and we have been best friends for 43 years, since his escape from Farview State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Unfortunately, Bill passed away in May 2014. He was a wonderful man and had a truly inspiring life. He dedicated himself to the Mental Health field, and was President of the California Mental Health Association.

I read this book many years ago and have not been able to forget it nor what this man went through. This is a true story of how Mr. Thomas was misdiagnosed and abusively treated in the mental institution. A must, must read for those involved in the care of the emotionally disturbed.

great story
This book was especially fascinating to me on many levels. I am from Harrisburg, Pa and spent a lot of time in York in the early 60's. I never knew Bill but I dated Teddy Boone who is mentioned several times. I am certain that teddy Boone is an alias for E.K. Harrisburg State Hospital grounds remain the same as they were when this book was written, but now the buildings are State Office buildings. It saddens me that so many "insane" people were cast aside so easily and so collectively mistreated. Thank you Bill Thomas for writing this informative book and for not ignoring the vast injustice inflicted on these poor victims after you managed your own freedom.
