The purpose of this book is to provide an introduction to international relations which helps to bridge the distance between theoretical work being developed by scholars and the more topical materials needed by beginning students in this field. In this book, we have employed two broad conceptual approaches to the study of international relations as organizing tools for the discussion of historical materials and case studies. The first part of the book focuses on broad patterns of international relations. The historical materials selected for this part help to illustrate how "systems concepts" may be employed to understand general patterns of relations among nations and how these relationships change over time. This approach also helps the reader to gain some historical perspective for thinking about current international affairs. In the second part of the book, case studies are used to illustrate how "foreign-policy decision-making analysis" can be used in the study of international relations. The focus of analysis is on the characteristics of the countries and their foreign-policy decision makers. By using actual cases involving several different types of countries, this material also helps to provide the reader with some important factual information about foreign policy in the world today.
