S ir Herbert Ashworth, who has died aged 90, was chairman of Britain's . An avid reader, he wrote a number of books, including The Building Society Story (1980).
S ir Herbert Ashworth, who has died aged 90, was chairman of Britain's third largest building society, the Nationwide, from 1970 to 1982 and made a major contribution to the growth of the building society movement from the late 1930s to the 1980s. During this period, home ownership expanded to more than 60% and building society membership was seen within most families. Ashworth realised this danger and had the vision to widen the society's appeal to the public at large. He set out to greatly expand the branch network.
