The Spanish Civil War is burned into European consciousness, not simply because it prefigured the much larger world war that followed it, but because the intense manner of its prosecution was a harbinger of a new and horrific form of warfare that was universally dreaded. This is an excellent unbiased book cataloguing the horrors perpetrated by both sides in the Spanish Civil War. After reading this book, as with Peterloo, I feel ashamed I didn't know this information many years ago, another failure for this autodidact. Some facts to consider

The Spanish Civil War (Spanish: Guerra Civil Española) was a civil war in Spain fought from 1936 to 1939.

The Spanish Civil War (Spanish: Guerra Civil Española) was a civil war in Spain fought from 1936 to 1939. Republicans loyal to the left-leaning Second Spanish Republic, in alliance with anarchists, fought against a revolt by the Nationalists, an alliance of Falangists, monarchists, conservatives and Catholics, led by a military group among whom General Francisco Franco soon achieved a preponderant role.

This book explains the background to the war and charts the course of the nearly three-year long conflict through to General Franco's victory.

Talk about The Spanish Civil War, 1936-39

Querlaca
This book provided a very detailed description of the Civil War. It notably described the roles of the Spanish but also that of Italy and Germany. The atrocities described were shocking given that both sides were countrymen.

One criticism is that one could easily get bogged down in some of the detail.
Zehaffy
Exactly what I wanted, clear and concise. Not very biographical, but a good history.
Xarcondre
The author's personal politics leads him to be rather grudging when he speaks of atrocities committed by the Republican side, and to engage in some annoying whataboutism, immediately following up with context designed to soften the blow against the Republican reputation, or with a worse Nationalist tragedy. This gets annoying, but doesn't ultimately detract too much from an otherwise devastating and informative look at a horrible event.
Kalrajas
If you're interested in understanding modern Spanish politics this is a big help with the 1920's to the end of the 30's. It can feel like a sprawling narrative with all of the different figures and groups involved, but by using bookmarks and constantly referencing who is who and doing what (which can be a little time consuming but ultimately worth it), you get into the story.

Not only does Preston bring discuss politics, but also the regional identities in Spain and how they interacted and impacted the outcome of the Spanish Civil War. This conflict is part of the power balance and shows the rise of fascism that started the second World War. I'd recommend this book to anybody who is curious about Spain's history, the roots of fascism, World War II history and world history.
Meztihn
Good history without getting bogged down in details. Covers background, its place in the international setting, personalities, progression, aftermath. Preston is a lefty and does not understand how much the chaos of the Republic scared the middle and upper classes. But you can read between the lines to get the full picture.
Gavirus
An excellent book that is well written and that gives amplification to important but often overlooked facts about this horrific theatre of conflict; it is written both for the professional scholar of history and the layman. D.Sonek.

GREAT BOOK
I am simply a history nut, and love to read about historical events. I was a little behind on my knowledge of the Spanish Civil War and I learned a lot.
