The problem was her first husband, Willy (whose real name was Henry Gauthier-Villars). Fourteen years Colette’s senior, Willy was a disaster as a husband and partner. Not only did he compel her to write the stories, but then published them under his name. Claudine at School (1900) was the first of the efforts to be published and was an immediate success.
