I enjoyed this book so much that I am posting my first book review on Amazon. This is one book that lives up to its title. Needless to say, I highly recommend it.
Dr. Brandon Colby has written the definitive guide to genetic screening. Dr. Colby has clearly spent years researching the material distilled in this book. Surprisingly, he has managed to make the material both fun to read and understandable, with delightful anecdotes interspersed throughout. The book is broken down into easy to digest chapters, making it easy to skip to the chapters that interest you most. Although I have to warn you that it will be difficult to put the book down once you start reading. I lent a copy of the book to my mother who has an interest in, or should I say fear of, Alzheimer's Disease and she ended up reading not just that one chapter, but the whole book, that same weekend. After reading this book, I will never again think that my genes are my destiny.
My only fault with the book is that it was not always detailed enough, peeking but not always quenching, my curiosity. I followed some of the links in the book, and found that the website [...], the online companion to the book, helped fill in some of these gaps. I did a little more research and found Dr. Colby's medical practice at [...]. I am looking forward to outsmarting my genes and seeing how the book translates into actual medical practice and therefore plan on scheduling an appointment for the next time I am in Los Angeles.
Dr. Colby's obvious passion for the potential of genetic screening to revolutionize medical care shines through on every page. It makes me wonder why modern medicine has been unable to take the advances discovered every day by scientific researchers and apply them to the current practice of medicine. This book should be required reading for all medical students.

Outsmart Your Genes is among the most poignant books I have read in a long time. Complex advancements in science are rarely disseminated in such an engaging, simple, yet sophisticated manner, and the medical breakthroughs presented by Dr. Colby are life altering. As much a skilled writer as a geneticist, Dr. Colby describes in page turning crispness the next iteration of the genomics revolution: how it can help us - today.
Before finishing Part 1, I ordered multiple copies of the book for friends and family, and I intend to order more. Though Dr. Colby's style is affable and subtle, and his apparent intention is simply to impart cutting edge scientific discovery, the message I gleaned was one of a compelling call to action for patients and doctors alike. If knowledge is power, the learning derived from Outsmart Your Genes empowers us tremendously over our lives. I highly recommend the book to readers interested in health and wellness, parents, people suffering from particular diseases or who know their family history may place them in a position of greater risk of contracting a particular disease. Further, I recommend actual genetic testing in the manner described by Dr. Colby for all of us who can afford a test, which is rapidly becoming less costly over time.

This is a good book to become start with. Makes for easy reading on a hard to understand subject. I learned much, and it has made me both interested in learning more, as well as given me the basic understand for more difficult reading.

If you had a look at my bookshelf you would see 100's of books on various aspects of health, but I can tell you that this book by far the best health book I have ever read. Dr Colby turns the complicated subject of genetics into an easy to understand look at the future of predictive medicine. You will understand genetic testing and how it can benefit you and your family today and for decades to come.

It is a must read for anyone who wants to be a pro-active player in their own health today and in the future.

I have just given this book to my own Dr who is very interested in the subject.

Dr Colby's book is really mapping clearly how healthcare will evolve in the next 10-30 years. Although genetics is often an obscure and complicated field, Dr Colby makes it easy to understand and also to link it to how this will impact everybody's life and the healthcare system in general. The book covers most of the current diseases and how genetics will help us prevent them by adapting our lifestyle - it definitely gives hope to everybody, as he explains that lifestyle factors can impact the risks to develop a certain disease (despite your genetic predisposition). Definitely worth reading. I recommend it to anybody who is interested to learn more about themselves, genetics and healthcare in general, anybody who wants to take control of their destiny and outsmart their genes.

Before reading this book I didn't think I'd ever understand genetic testing - or even want to understand it. But after my sister gave it to me as a gift and said how astounded she was by it I felt obligated to read a few pages. A few pages quickly turned into me reading the entire book and I'm so happy I did because it has completely changed my perspective on medicine. And, best of all, it was so easy to read that I now understand why people are always saying genetics is a revolution and that it is going to change how medicine is practiced. Although I felt the chapter on heart disease was a bit long, overall the book was truly a pleasure to read. Because of this book I now actually understand this fascinating field and have already scheduled an appointment with my doctor to discuss having my genes tested. This is unquestionably a five star book.

very good info on gene mutation and gene test. Gene decide your health, everyone should know it, to protect your possible disease.
It is a very interesting book. It answers lot of questions regarding genetic testing. I really loved it. It is written in a very simple language without too many medical terminology. I highly recommend to everyone to read this book.
