The book, based on lectures given at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna, has a nicely colloquial . So much is slanted toward the Revolution being a Political Coup d'etat instead of a Revolution that the book eliminates any "social forces" at work.

The book, based on lectures given at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna, has a nicely colloquial feel, clarity, and vigor. At the heart of the answers to the first two questions is Pipes's assertion that, far from being the product of large, impersonal forces of history, the fall of the tsar and the rise to power of the Bolsheviks (in, he reminds us, a coup d'‚tat largely unsupported by the Russian people) were the result of the old regime's clear. The author admits this from the start.

A very informative book, even though it's dated...I owned a copy years ago, and somehow lost it in moving or whatever. Glad to have replaced it, and nice to be able to compare the knowledge and advances in the nutritional field since the book was first published.

If we know how to eat properly what the body really needs, we shall stay healthy. The person who cooks in a home should understand the power in their choices. Every home should have one for guidance.

It will take a while to get through this tome, but the information thus far
is enlightening and well written.

Dr. Firshein offers a tremendous amount of interesting and useful information here, particularly with respect to some less-well-known supplements that many people can benefit from. The book is well organized, and each chapter ends with dosage recommendations based on general usage and for people struggling with specific conditions.

Unfortunately, this won't be a book that I routinely recommend to others because of a few big missteps:

- Firshein is extremely pro-soy; he strongly recommends consuming soy products. This may have been appropriate for a handful of the patients whose stories he discusses in the book, but is far more likely to be dangerous and result in serious negative health impacts for most people.

- Nutrients are presented in a 'buffet' format, and readers are encouraged to simply pick and choose what sounds like it addresses their needs. In practice (and the provided anecdotes!), however, it is clear that almost all of these nutrients must be used in concert with other supplements, diet/lifestyle change, and/or additional supports to achieve the results modeled by this example stories. It's just not that likely that someone with no nutrition background will be able to put these pieces together in their own truly beneficial program.

- Very little guidance is offered on where to find and how to select quality supplements, which is critically important because low-quality supplements tend to be full of fillers (including common allergens) and processed in ways that drastically reduce their efficacy. (Thus potentially costing customers huge amounts of money while delivering very little benefit.)

Ultimately, the best I can say about this book is that it is a great place to find information you can use to start a conversation with your healthcare provider or to jump-start or provide focus for more in-depth research elsewhere.

Other reviewers have pointed out the positives, and I agree. This book is full of valuable insights and well worth reading, even 10 years after publication, especially at the prices it goes for these days. But I didn't enjoy the author's writing style. Too much of it was first person narrative, and honestly he comes across as fairly egocentric. Also, WAY too much space was devoted to anecdotes from his practice. I could see the value of having even two per nutrient discussed but I'd estimate that more than half the book is anecdotal, and little would be lost by skimming these. And it is full of more spelling and grammar errors than I've ever seen. Recommended in spite of these flaws. If you haven't read Life Extension - APSA, pick that up first.

I only wish that it was one of the rec'd reading texts at school. Any new doctor would benefit from reading this info, and because it limits it's scope to the 20 things you most commonly see in practice, it is both pertinant and memorable. The info can easily be assimilated into practice, and does not require excessive patient compliance.
For the layman, this is worth having in your library. Many of your chief complaints are not treated well wih traditional medicine, and this book gives you the info you need to treat yourself.
