A great reference book to improve putting, chipping, pitching and sand shots. I like the way it is written - an intro to each shot, an illustration of the basic stroke, various scenario solutions, and drills. I have improved my short game and lowered my handicap because of this book.

It is often said golfers should beware of golf books and magazines, because there's a tower of babel of conflicting information in print, which can cause an already struggling golfer to become hopelessly confused. This advice is true accept when it come to the likes of Tom Watson. His level of mastery especially in the short game qualifies him to give advice that really helps. Most amatuer golfers are aware the best way to lower their score is to work at their short game. This book is very helpful not only because it shares the insights of one of the games best players, but also for how it's laid out and the illustrations. Great book for anyone trying to improve their game.

I bought this used book after I read his "The Timeless Swing". "The Timeless Swing" teaches full swing. In order to improve scores we need different skills around and on greens. This book tells us how to develop those skills. I learned chipping, pitching and bunker shot mostly from this book. I have different way to putt, though. The nice thing is that his teaching on them is relatively simple and concise. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve the game.

This book is still one of the best golf books on the short game every written. I am a teaching golf professional and have been teachimg for over 20 years. I have read them all. Tom Watson's book is simple and easy to understand without going overboard on the mechanics. I still recommend this book to all of my students. Forget all of the Dave Pelz books, etc., and stick with this one. Pelz has done a very thorough job, but is way too technical for the average player. If you are a single digit handicapper, then you might also find Corey Pavin's book on shot making very useful. You won't need any other books in your library for the SHORT GAME. These two books will cover all that you need. The rest is up you in terms of practice.

I enjoyed this book, as I have the other books I've read from Tom Watson. Strategic Golf is also a good read. Anways, this book is packed full of illustrations. It also has a number of annecdotes by Watson. He discusses various "percentage" plays for poor lies and trouble situations in golf, and it could any player trying to lower their handicap. Learning to get it up and down more often is one of the things that separates good players from average ones.

As described. Couple marks and noted but readable
I have read extensively and found that Tom Watson's technical strategy is simple and straight forward - no gimmicks. His sand play strategy has you hoping you land in the sand trap - with a little practice you'll find you have greater control from the sand. His book lays out strategy in a cohesive fashion that puts a short game plan together that works to your talents. This book changed my game forever. It allows you to be very competitve with your short game. You may find bits and pieces of this strategy in articles and other books but this book gets it right!
