This is a great book for someone just getting into laser sailing and club racing. I would certainly recommend it for that purpose. I probably would have given it five stars if the title weren't misleading. There's not much here for the intermediate or advanced sailor. If you are farther along and looking for advanced technique and rigging guidance you would get much more value from the similar RYA Goodison laser book.

I bought this book for my 15 year old nephew who just bought his first used (and pretty beaten up) Laser. I'm probably guilty of making him do so: I have sailed Lasers for the past 20 years and let my nephew out on his own on mine for the last couple of years, ever since he was heavy enough to get it upright again after capsizing...

As so many books of this kind, it is trying to serve everyone's needs. But that's really impossible to do. While many things discussed are excellent for the beginner, many times the language used makes only sense if you have been sailing for quite some time. The book puts a lot of emphasis on racing the boat, yet for the new Laser owner this may be in the more distant future. The book probably makes the most sense for a somewhat experienced sailor who decides to buy a Laser and plans on racing it. A young sailor will frequently struggle with the technical terms. And there is not that much more an experienced sailor couldn't learn on his or her own.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading it and even after all the years sailing this fun boat, I found a few new things. And my nephew may not get everything on first try, but after some research it will make more sense. I have no regrets that I bought it.

This is a good book if you're looking for information on technique and tactics. However, I found the section on how to rig the Laser to be extremely lacking. The book uses a large amount of jargon or technical terms that are not clearly explained, and talks about various knots without actually showing how to tie them. For example, it says to "make a handle" with a piece of rope, and then has a picture of a neat little rope handle. How to make such a handle is not explained anywhere. This book is fine for beginners who don't need to rig their own boats or intermediates who want to better their technique (particularly how to trim the sail). However, it's not very useful for someone like me who already knows basic techniques, but isn't great with rigging and knots.

With a name like "The Laser Book", you would expect it to be a comprehensive book that covers everything you need to know about how to get a Laser going. Unfortunately, without a better rigging section and guide to the knots mentioned, you'll be stuck on land.

great book for us as people relatively new to sailing - we haven't sailed in years and now are kids are into it, so we wanted to brush up on things. so far the book seems great. however, the photos are not clearly associated with the text - so you are not 100% sure what you are looking at in relation to the several topics on a page... but that is not a huge problem.

Perfect! Very practical and low-entry, use it also to show my 8 yo how it's done ;-)

I needed a book on laser sailing because I was getting back into the sport after a 10 year hiatus. I wanted a book that explained how to rig the boat and also tips on sailing in different wind conditions. This book is excellent for both of those topics. The rigging guide is standard for all 3 rigs, but sailing and racing tips are individualized for the full, radial, and 4.7 rigs. I've read in other reviews that the terminology used in the book is for the advanced sailor, but I disagree. True, you may need to know some basic sailing terms to understand the book (eg starboard, port, clew, vang, etc.), but there are diagrams in the book which label the boat & explain many of these terms.

I'm new to sailing, and learning on a used Laser. This is the book I should have bought first! There's a lot of beginner content, and a lot of stuff for me to work up to. This book will help take you from zero to competant.
Excellent book. One could learn to sail by just reading it!
