What is the attraction of ponds? Why do so many homeowners choose a sitewith a pond on the property, or build their own water vista?

Ponds, when properly managed, enhance a property. Ponds provide an environment for fish, recreational entertainment through swimming or boating, a satisfying wildlife habitat, and higher real estate value to any rural property.

Ponds are hard work. They do not flourish on their own. The wise property-owner manages his or her pond for maximum enjoyment and pleasure.

John Stephen Hicks has spent much of his private and professional life around lake or pond environments, and this book is a comprehensive summary of his years of experience in pond and landscape management. Written for the serious layperson, The Pond Book explores the wide variety of pond ecosystems available, and their function; topographic and soil requirements, design and construction techniques, wildlife management, fish species and their cultivation, local bylaws affecting pond maintenance, algae and plant control, parasite problems, chemical and physical parameters of water sources, and water control / erosion devices.

It is excellent at explaining the many facets of pond management but if you are already dealing with existing problems it is a lot of data thrown at you, still very informative and well organized. For my needs I require the assistance of an I gave it a quick read.

After the pond is completed, success or failure depends on using practices.

A pond that consistently produces good catches of fish is a result of proper planning, construction, and management. Poor planning, improper construction, or lack of proper management results in lakes and ponds that are relatively unproductive or problematic. It is critical that as a landowner you clearly define your objectives in the beginning, before the first soil is moved. After the pond is completed, success or failure depends on using practices to establish and maintain good fish populations.

I've bought 4 different 'farm pond' type books over the past two years to help in getting a 1/4 pond we had created dug, and lately filled with water. Also have stocked it with fish and it is doing well so far. Like the various diagnostic / info sections on different types of pond plants and fish. This is the most informative/best all around of the 4 books I bought.

Complete. Lots of pictures. Answers almost all questions. Looked more for survivalist type of installation, but explains all parts of building and maintenance.
