Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy and patron of this work, had taken control of Hainault in 1433 and Waquelin's translation into French of the Annales historiae principum hannoniae is as much a comment on the power struggles of his day as it is a valuable piece of evidence for medieval literary reception. The introduction examines Philip's reputation, his political interests and French historiography at the Burgundian court, with commentary on the original Annales and the French translation. The text is reproduced in facsimile, with discussions in French and Flemish.
