• The classic study of the cosmological principles found in the patterns of Islamic art and how they relate to sacred geometry and the perennial philosophy. • 150 color and black-and-white drawings of Islamic patterns. • Explains how these patterns guide the mind from the mundane world of appearances to its underlying reality. For centuries the nature and meaning of Islamic art has been wrongly regarded in the West as mere decoration. In truth, because the portrayal of human and animal forms has always been discouraged on Islamic religious principles that forbid idolatry, the abstract art of Islam represents the sophisticated development of a nonnaturalistic tradition. Through this tradition, Islamic art has maintained its chief aim: the affirmation of unity as expressed in diversity. In this fascinating study the author explores the idea that unlike medieval Christian art, in which the polarization of such forms and patterns was relegated to a background against which to set sacred images, the geometrical patterns of Islamic art can reveal the intrinsic cosmological laws affecting all creation. Their primary function is to guide the mind from the mundane world of appearances toward its underlying reality. Numerous drawings connect the art of Islam to the Pythagorean science of mathematics, and through these images we can see how an Earth-centered view of the cosmos provides renewed significance to those number patterns produced by the orbits of the planets. The author shows the essential philosophical and practical basis of every art creation--whether a tile, carpet, or wall--and how this use of mathematical tessellations affirms the essential unity of all things. An invaluable study for all those interested in sacred art, Islamic Patterns is also a rich source of inspiration for artists and designers.

Keith Critchlow breaks down the geometric patterns of Islamic tilings brilliantly.

Muslims have produced an extremely elaborate form of abstract art, since they have been prohibited to draw images of God or his creations. Keith Critchlow breaks down the geometric patterns of Islamic tilings brilliantly. The step by step explanations of how the patterns are created through geometry make it easy to start creating your own tessellations. He breaks downs the more common Islamic designs into steps that show the progression of the design.

For centuries the nature and meaning of Islamic art has been misunderstood in the West, being regarded as no more than decoration. But in fact the abstract art of Islam represents the sophisticated development of a supra-naturalistic tradition, since the portrayal of human and animal forms has always been discouraged by the Prophet Muhammad, so as to avoid idolatry.

Talk about Islamic Patterns: An Analytical and Cosmological Approach

There is some wild stuff in here. Mosaic patterns, strange number patterns, and how it all apparently relates on a cosmological scale. I don't even know what it all has to do with mosaics, and certainly can't always follow what he is saying, but he will take your brain to new places. If you are interested in mosaics and/or Islamic culture, this is a must-have.

This book has amazing examples of how to extend and create Islamic geometric designs. Though the book is not for beginners. It would be better to start with something like https://www.amazon.com/Designa-Wooden-Books-Adam-Tetlow/dp/1620406594/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1535979497&sr=8-2&keywords=designa which shows the building blocks of the patterns. The writing is pretty incomprehensible, but the illustrations are fantastic.

In this very interesting book Keith Critchlow shows us how spirituality and geometry are linked, in the Islamic art of exploring symmetry. Muslims have produced an extremely elaborate form of abstract art, since they have been prohibited to draw images of God or his creations. Critchlow demonstrates profusely what a vast spectrum of possibilities were discovered by Islamic geometers or mathematicians, and that the meaning of these patterns goes far deeper than mere decoration.

A good reference when you when something with Islamic context.

Great Book, arrived in fine shape, could we be looking at the makeup of the fabric of the universe?

Worth studying, studying, and studying.

The book that gives a lot of knowledge
The text is so deep that I needed to read each paragraph several times to get some new concepts. Indeed a powerful initiation into the beautiful patterns of cosmic science.
